hello everyone

we have decided to join the ranks of the great and good and finally bought a tent and planning on a week in France in July/August.

We are feeling totally overwhelmed with regards to the amount of sites out there and just wondered if anyone had any tips for a good site for first time campers (with children) prob don't want to travel more than 5 hours from Calais.

Thank you Fiona

The first thing to decide is if you want an in-land site or coastal. You could easily get 300 miles in five hours so it gives you some scope. The further south its more likely that you will get better weather.

I'd have a look through the Eurocamp, canvas brochures/websites and see what sort of site appeals. In the meantime I am sure there will be many people posting soon with site recommendations.

The great thing about camping in France, is that it's different strokes, for different folks.

We always head for the Sun in July, so never do Northern France, but that's just us.

To help narrow your campsite search down, have a look at ACSI listed sites, most are 4 star, and many are "Camping Qualitie" accredited, you may pay a little more on these sites during peak, for us that means £200 per week for a 4 star site, when on the same campsite at the same time of year, folk are paying £800 per week to be in a static.

Just do your research and all will be fine, enjoy!.

Best campings likely to be booked until mid aug when prices drop as demand reduces.

Find somewhere the kids are likely to be happy [that usually means other kids that talk English about] and the rest is easy.

Fiona, only going for one week ties you down a bit and isnt 'economical' if youre trying to keep cost down? you dont say you are, but camping can be VERY economical!!

the fuel to get there will cost the same as for two weeks

the crossing will cost the same as for two weeks

wherever you are, at home or in france, you need to eat, so there will be a little more cost for more than one week

if you pick a site with pools and free entertainment then it will help to keep the cost down aswell - kids all day in the pool, wine, food from the local supermarket/farm shop - relaxed bbq evenings sat around the tent - similarly if theyre happy on the beach all day that keeps the cost down - but wherever you choose i am sure both you and the kids will love it - i personally would consider the Vendee - its about six hours (plus) from calais, but the weather should be great that time of year.

Lac D'Orient near Troyes is about 5 hours drive from Calais, not coastal but the lake is huge with proper beaches - it's further south so there's a good chance of some sunshine. Try this site

I haven't been to this one but it has a pool complex, is on the lake and the reviews look good. Have fun!
