Hi, I've been doing a route planner from Karlsruhe to Innsbruck and the route suggested takes us over the Fern Pass. Does anyone know if this will be okay towing a caravan. It does sound as though it is well used as a commercial route and for tourist buses so should be fine but any advice would be appreciated.

Also does anyone know if there is somewhere to buy a vignette for Austria on this route (as it's not a motorway). We probably could get to the campsite without going on the motorway but I'd prefer to get one as soon as we can and then we don't have to worry.

The Fern Pass is fine for a caravan we came back that way from Italy last year via the brenner. We stayed at a little campsite cqalled camping riffler in Landdeck. As for the vignette we were lucky to make it through without one but I was told that any service or petrol staion near the border sell them.

We have been both ways on the Fern Pass on different trips and did not experience any problems. On weekdays its busy with commercial traffic and at weekends with leisure traffic so its not a fast route but still much quicker than the long way round. As for the Vignette the motorway makes for an easier journey. If you use the Fern Pass there is a shop/cafe at the old border which sells them and they are under €10 and you only need one for the car not the caravan. Otherwise all the service stations on the approach to Austria sell them, look out for the Austrian crest on a red background.

But after the Fern Pass go on as far as Imst before turning east for Innsbruck. The short cut over the Holzleitner Sattel is not on if you are towing.

Though if you are heading on into Italy the Resia Pass (south from Landeck) is an attractive alternative to the Brenner- and that pass is fine for towing.

I appreciate that is the accepted wisdom but once when we left Stams we headed up to road 189 (Telfs to Imst) via Molz and found the road perfectly acceptable for towing. In the not too twisty climbs it is 3 lane (2 up/1 down).

David Klyne. Could you please do a report for the Caravan Club when you get back as they are still warning people off towing on that particular road - and your account of it will be more up to date than mine. Thanks.
