It really must have been that - I can't imagine 'Tres Rustique Restaurant' which was all there was where we were, emitting a chip-shop smell!

I am not suggesting this is the problem you had, but earlier thsi year I had a problem with the "diesel bug" or bacteria in the fuel tank!  It is recognised by a brown waxy slime on the fuel filter element and inside the casing.  Beacause the better half was able to take a smaller car to work the tow car was left on the drive way.  After a coule of week I went out and one of the injectors failed presumably because the bacterial had got past the filter and  multiplied inthe pipes to the injectors.  We have not had aproblem since treating fuel with a bacteriacide and an addative to inhibit suitable conditions for its development.  For more info google "diesel bug" or "bacteria in diesel".

Some words of advice: DO NOT fill your vehicles with E30 Diesel, think upon it as TVO. OK for clapped out recalcitrant tractors and other odd bits of knackered agricultural machinery but NOTHING else. Will cost you a fortune in repair costs.

Hi Bonzo - thanks, but we didn't know what we were buying, and OH is certain that it was the only diesel pump on the 'bollard'.  From French forums it appears that there may well have been a lot of 'bad diesel' from the 24th/25th May at Super U filling stations, until about the 11th June - and we can only presume that we bought two tankfuls!

I'll report back on the repair costs tomorrow, but we don't expect it to be cheap.  I wonder if SuperU might be subject to the claims from motorists which supermarkets here were a year or two ago when they were selling 'bad' diesel!

This morning after almost a full tank of British fuel has gone through, the smoke from the exhaust is no longer black and thick and treacly like it was, and the engine isn't 'popping' any more, but it still doesn't sound right.

I had a similar problem. Change your fuel filter. I now change mine once a year whatever mileage,and have no trouble since.

Thanks everyone!  Diesel Dave has sorted things out for us, and it's now running perfectly again!
