We loved Vulcania, €22 each for adults now, but thought it well worth it. The school parties there seemed to love it. We went to Puy de Sancy, as the temperature was 8 degrees at the foot of the mountain we decided against walking up it (takes 3 3/4 hours or so it says), and OH won't use cable cars. The weather for the week we were there was rubbish and there was still snow on the mountains, unheard of apparently. We stayed at Camping de Viginet, an ACSI site at St. Nectaire which is one strange place. If the weather had been better we would have looked into the site at Besse, much nicer place.

When ive visited Disney i feel like ive been pick pocketed by the outragous prices,ditto Vulcania,they could both learn from Tescos regard queing ( August atleast).

We visited this area last year......Volvic is a hideous place, the campsite looks like a concentration camp.

We found a lovely spotcalled Chatel Guyon.

Very small campsite,terraced with lovely views. Tah faclities were amazing...the only downside was we git stuck next to a group of caravanner who must have been deaf, or were they just loud ?!!

Camping de la Croze, Chatel Guyon.

We wre actually on the way to another site of which names escapes me.

The train and visitors centre at Puy De Dome was fabulous, we walked back down through the meadows. It was lovely.

then we went back up into Burgundy which feels more like the France we love.

We stopped over in the area a few years ago, I know it was a municipal but can't remember where it was so perhaps someone on here will know. It was a wooded site with a chalet style toilet block. It was situated next to the municipal leisure centre/swimming pool and at one end of the site was an amazing bmx style cycle track. I remember well my kids convincing me to go down a very steep slope on my touring bike which I will never repeat again, to this day I'm not sure how I managed to stay on the bike and balance especially as my eyes were tightly shut! Site was clean, cheap and owners/managers friendly with plenty to do for the kids and brave adults! If anyone recognises this description it would be wonderful as I have no idea where it is depite trying to narrow it down on the map.

If you are worried about walking to top of Puy de Dome take the train. A fantastic experience and I believe was 8 euros each for oaps. Fab value.

After extensive research I have found the site we visited. To confirm it's the right site I looked up BMX and it is definately the course however it doesn't seem to be open to the public! Here is the link to a review on this site: http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/reviews.asp?revid=12819

I have never been able to do that HERE in red writing thing.
If you like laid back, freedom and adventure this is a lovely site however as we were passing through we didn't explore further afield so not sure if it's in the right location. Pleased I found it again though.

Sancy is the biggest hill in the Puys and has a ski-lift operating year long (between Le Mon Dore and La Bourboule) - then it's a fairly gentle walk back down! Weather can get wet and electrical so check the forecast before you start off!

Lots of campsites between Le Mon Dore and La Bourboule. Both towns have lots of restos (La Bourboule is particularrly good - some gourmet but some cheap!) and the whole area is full of short walks. Both have funicular/ski-lifts up to the surrounding hills - the one at La Bourboule starts near the Hotel de Ville.

Last year we made the mistake of gong the long way round, as we were visiting friends in the Haute Vienne first......We should have spent more time exploring this volcanic region as it is outstanding, and as you say great walking.

the panormic train is fantastcic though.
