Hi All,It's our first time camping in France (Tent). Can anyone reccomend a quiet campsite maybe about a three hour drive from Calais. Wife and I retired now so maybe a site without childrens facilities done that now it's our turn also can anyone explain just what municipal sites are, can't quite understand what they are all about. Also will my standard electric hookup be ok for France. Many thanks in advance.Denny.

Hi Denny,
I cant help with a site, but I'll have a go at the rest!

Just about every town/village has a municipal site which is run by the local authority (although it looks like some are being run independently now). They are usually clean and fairly cheap, but again some may be in need of modernisation. You can usually just turn up at one of these without needing to book.

The Alan Rogers guides will normally give you information on these sites, and the website is pretty good too.

Most sites in France are now going over to the 'standard' plug that we use, but some still use a French two pin plug. We carry an adaptor just in case but haven't had to use it! We also have an adaptor to deal with any reverse polarity issues (where the live and neutral are reversed due to the French wiring system). There are many threads on here about that, and opinion is split as to whether it's a matter for concern or not. Again, I've played it safe and made an adaptor to deal with that but only had to use it once.

Other posters will probably be able to give you more!

Enjoy France - we love it camping over there and won't be thinking about summer in the UK for some time to come!!

Regards

-------------

You might like this campsite nr the historic town of Saint-Quentin just over 100miles sth of Calais, straight down the motorway.

Denny67.  Go on, give us a clue please where you want to go.

Three hours drive from Calais includes all the Normandy coast down to Le Havre in one direction, most of Belgium and up into Holland the other way - and the northern edge of Paris as well if you'd like to go there.

The world's your oyster and I hope you have a great time.
