Hi Guys,

Once again I need help and I am sure that some of you will come forward with some great advice. Late July I hope to be travelling from Arnhem in Holland to the Rhine valley. From research on the webb, it appears that Koblenz to Trier is the best route aswe are then heading into Luxemburg. Due to time limits imposed by travelling friends, I reckon that a stop in each of these locations for three nights will be all that we can stay, then they have to head back to Calais, where as we will be heading into France.

What I am exactly looking for is a good caravansite at Koblenz and Trier. I really would like one on the river and within walking distance of a small town/village with eating houses, bars and a few shops, surely not a lot to ask.

really appreciate your help

hi

we have camped a couple of times near trier on our way down through europe. there is a small town called schweich just a few miles east of trier with a campsite right on the river. the campsite itself has a small bar/restaurant where you can sit outside by the river and watch the barges go by.

the town is literally a couple of minutes walk, and has a good selection of shops including a couple of supermarkets (with giant beer shop!), italian/german restaurants, banks, and a lovely municipal swimming pool with waterslides and sunbathing area.

the campsite is mainly used by german and dutch campers - (we have yet to spot any other british travellers!) and is a mix of permanent pitches and tourers. the toilet and shower block is the only slightly disappointing factor - they are old, and tend to get quite a few spiders over night! They are cleaned however and perfectly functional for a short stay.

the food served on the campsite is great, especially the giant rack of ribs with barbeque sauce, and it is great to sit by the river with a pint of the local lager, Bitburger.

trier is a lovely city to visit with roman remains, museums and a good selection of shops and restaurants. it is a really good base for exploring the local region, and for a stopover as it is only metres away from the motorway.

Camping Burgen is a really nice, well kept site.  About half way between Cochem and Koblenz at Burgen.  Short walk to small village - campsite is just to the N of village.  The winemakers Gunther have a small restaurant in the village.  Burgen is small but has a few shops and a bank.  Ideal location for visiting Burg Eltz and other castles.  We have visited both Koblenz and Cochem from Burgen.  Last weekend in August is the Weinfest in Cochem - good firework display (free) at about 9pm on the Sunday - for a good view, go to the bridge about a quarter of a mile N. of Cochem.  Park car on bridge and just get out - need to arrive early though.  Cochem is worth a visit - small kids will like the 'teddy bear blowing bubbles (as our kids used to call it) and the toyshop down one of the small alleys.  Opportunity to go on a river boat trip from Cochem (and to have a meal on the boat if you wish).

Camping Burgen used to be run by Dieter Linzenbach, but he has now retired.  We have not been since he has gone, but the site certainly was extremely well looked after (better than La Laguna just S of Burgen).  The toilet blocks always looked temporary, but when you get inside they feel spacious and were by far the cleanest toiley block I have ever been in.  Very reasonably priced site too, with a small discount if you have a Camping Carnet.  They had a good number of seasonal pitches - the site is right on the banks of the Mosel.  Small pool but not heated, therefore not for the feint-hearted!  Play area for the kids.  Easy access to the river for fishing or if you have a dinghy etc.

Burgen was always our final destination, and we always left Burgen to go straight back to Calais - often the morning following the Cochem fireworks.  It's a great area to visit and always feels more friendly than the Rhine IMHO.

Edit: Sometimes Burgen is also spelt Bergen.

Hope this is of some use.  Best wishes.

Hi

You beat us to it with this thread so I am also very interested in the replies!

We are going to the Alsace in July and have decided to travel back to Dunkirk through Germany.  We have been thinking of Koblenz and Cologne.

Is it necessary to book sites in Germany or is it OK to just turn up as we would in France?

Gill

Here is the website: Camping Burgen

I don't think it is on UKCS - when I next go I will do a report.  Also I don't think they do csi/cc. but they still do a 10% reduction for having a camping carnet.  If your German is anything like mine, you will not understand much of the website, so will need to translate.  (You could go to the dropdown 'Page' option in IE and click on 'Translate with Bing').  At least they have a website now.

Works out at about 21 euros a night for two people + electric (then add 10% discount for camping carnet, taking it down to just under 19 euros) so it is a little over Camping Cheque prices, but not wildly so.  Extra for the kids (but then you would with camping cheques anyway.  You can get a pitch backing on to the Mosel for a little extra euros, but the site is really a thin band of grass so no one is far from the river.  If you have young ones, a bit of distance between the unit and the river might be a good idea.  The site is often visited by friendly ducks and the occasional swan - even more friendly if you have a crust of bread to hand.  Kids used to love feeding the ducks.

I think the site you are referring to is "Zum Fahrturm" (excuse my German!), which we stayed on recently.

The toilet block seemed quite good, could it have been renewed? There is only one block, right at one corner of the site. You do need a "loaded dongle" to use the showers, so presumably they charge for them. The "dongle" also operates the barrier.

MHs and caravans were segregated when we were there, the caravans staying more than one night being directed to the area nearest the toilets, the MHs to the next area, and the one-nighters being placed furthest away.

I would comment that although there are several fresh water taps on site, the only waste and toilet emptying, and rubbish depositing, is at the MH service point behind reception, which can be a fair hike.

EHU is 16 amps but metered, box is locked so you cannot see how much you are using. Units are charged at 55 euro cents each, so expensive. If you stay only 1 night there is a flat rate for electricity.

There is very little shade. And with very busy roads on 3 sides, we found it rather too noisy for us.

Sorry, forgot to answer your question about cycling.  The valley is often frequented by cyclists, being very flat by the river, but as far as I can remember the cycling has to be done on the road.  I think there are cycle lanes/paths, but to be honest I can't really remember.  Cycling in the Mosel (valley ) is quite common.
