Has anyone been here recently? It has a few good reviews but I would be interested in hearing about anyone who has been, especially in peak season (we are bound by the school holidays!) Many thanks

It's a lovely site - but VERY popular - and gets booked up quickly, so if you haven't already got a pitch booked you may be too late.

We haven't been in peak season, not recently anyway, and our last visit was just a look around to remind ourselves how nice it is!

Perhaps someone who has been more recently will be along to help out.

We stayed there August 2009, was a bit dissapointed with the site, as we have a twin axle caravan I always make sure they understand my requests, I also prefer fully serviced pitch and am happy to pay the supplements. Upon arrival at this site we were shown to our pitches, not very impressed under trees which required lights on everytime you entered the caravan, not of the 100sqm I was told we would have when making the booking, also not fully serviced! when we returned to the office to complain we were basically told that its pot luck if you get fully serviced pitch.

very dutch site (ran by dutch), I've always found the dutch very friendly and always happy to have a chat, but not this site kids very young left unsupervised as the adults just sat in groups talking to their own.

cant comment on the restaurant. Club house and entertainment which was only on a couple of the nights in the week we stayed was very good.

toilet block didnt seem to be able to cope with the peak season becomming blocked several times through the week.

river not very suitable for young kids to swim in as very deep and no beaches to enter only steep banks.

Beautiful area with lots to see and do.

Kitcat - when are you going?  One of your earlier posts says August, but what dates?  This can make an enormous difference - the last two weeks in August are often much quieter than the first two weeks - and I thought in one post you'd mentioned Camping Cheques, but can't find it.

I'd agree with pascalli about the river (Vezere) at Le Paradis, it's one of the disappointing things as we like campsites which have beaches on the river, so that you can paddle or swim.  You can canoe directly from Le Paradis, but I did think you had young children and the river definitely isn't suitable for paddling.

Somewhere which is lovely for littlies (and biggies too) is Soleil Plage, which is next to a beautiful section of the Dordogne river and has a river-sand beach.  There are other (cheaper) sites along that section which also have nice beaches.

Is Soleil Plage still a site in two quite separate halves as it used to be?  If so be very careful which half you are choosing. We were in an area down a separate road - and would have been happier on the original part of the site.

Yes it is - but we were on the part down by the river - probably the part you mean, but we liked it down there.  It was quieter, and we love having access to the river.

Maybe you had a dry week ,Val !!  We didn't !!

When we were there that low lying extension area down by the river was very wet, the pitches were awfully muddy, the staff couldn't keep the toilet block half way dry or clean, and cars going in and out of the site were splashing through great lakes on the roadways. And on the campsite map on the website it looks to me that the original part of the site (as well as being higher and drier) has access to the best bit of riverside beach.

We were there in May 2008 when the site was minutes away from needing to be evaccuated because of flooding. We were lucky, the upstream warning system indicated that the levels were going down and we could stay put.The Dutch campers had all left, the British campers had taken down their awnings, just in case!

I thought the site was okay but we probably weren't seeing it at its best. It takes camping cheques but only till the end of May then from September 1st. I thought it was a bit out of the way at 30k ms from Sarlat. My personal opinion is that it's over rated but a lot of people disagree as it's usually in the camping cheques top ten sites list.

We'd highlighted Soleil Plage for a visit in May the year before we actually stayed there - but driving down through France it was raining heavily.  The Loire was swollen and brown, and when we  got to the Vezere near Brive, that was a heaving brown mass of water, carrying logs and debris downstream and many feet higher than we'd ever seen it.  Without further consideration we realised that a riverside campsite was not the best in those circumstances.  We decided to head south instead, and carried on.  In Cahors we drove through 12 inches of water across the autoroute at one point, and decided we'd be better on a hilltop!

We stayed overnight at La Truffiere near St Cirq Lapopie and then found our usual crescent of sun in the Languedoc and headed there!  We had super weather for two weeks, but on our last few days we met caravanners who had been in the Dordogne and unable to leave their campsite for four days due to flooding.

Berriow, not sure which site you mean. It was Le Paradis I was talking about. I'm a big fan of Soleil Plage having been there in 2009 and again in 2010. The weather last year was disappointing but it was fabulous in 2009

Thanks everyone, its one of the last couple of weeks in august that we are thinking of. The things I am dubious about are whether there will be enough shade around the pitches and site generally and also if its suitable for my children who are 9 and 10. Useful to know that the river probably isnt an option as well as I assumed it was. Basically its got some good reviews and looks like it has good facilities and isnt too big but Im just a bit worried we will end up being on a bit of a desert 'island' on our pitch.

We thought the pitches were lovely, and the 'situation' is great - walking distance to the village, but years ago the river was a problem in that you couldn't paddle there - which we wanted at the time.  The site is beautiful - flowers everywhere, tropical vegetation, and nicely laid out with a good sanitary block and pool, and a very friendly and helpful family who run it,  but we haven't been in high season - and sites are very different then..

With small children I do think (that with the benefit of hindsight) that I'd choose somewhere else alongside a river where you could paddle, fish for tiddlers, and just chill out on a beach.  Having discovered (later) that there are actually lots of sites like that, that is what I (personally) would be looking for.
