Now that's an attitude I recognise... Hurrah.

Excellent....you can give me some advice!! We are travelling down from Northumberland to Newhaven on Friday 5th August. We have always used Portsmouth so this route is new to us. it looks like we have to negotiate the M25. i think we should hit it about early to mid afternoon. What's it like this time of day and would you say to avoid it?

Driving on a Friday you will find the evening rush hour starts about 1.00 o'clock in the afternoon, but is over by about 6.00 o'clock. Traffic does move but only slowly. I would come down the A1 and turn off onto A14 and down the M11. Reduces the amount of time on the M25!!

I have been badly stuck in the past 6 hr journey became 17hrs. The aire too full to pull into and the french out chatting on the autoroute. To be prepared make sure you have enough water in your car and food. It is still doable but head wrecking. We were given free pic nics on the route and we needed them.

Just tried to change tunnel tickets for a few hrs earlier, get to calais at 1:30 in the morning then a 10-12 hr journey do the Ardeche.
Only wanted to change by about 4 hrs, they wanted to charge me 75pounds. Well wife does not want to pay that, so will turn up 2-3hrs earlier and hope to just get an earlier crossing , always manages to get an earlier crossing when before, don't know how early they would let me go on.
Ah well.

If you get there 2 hours early or late it is no problem they will let you get on an earlier or later crossing with no extra charge providing there is space.

Good luck to all of you I know if you have school children your hands are tied, but better to go the last two weeks of school hols, ie 3rd and 4th week of August.

My son in law works in Paris and when he told them, the other year, he was travelling the first Sat in August, they raised there arms in dis-belief that an Englishman should choose to travel on Black Sat

now I'm really worried.  We travel from Calais to Chambord on Fri the5th and then on the 6th move on down to les peneyrals near sarlat.  Wish I'd just taken the decision to do calais to sarlat in one hit now!  Especially as it's our first trip to France.  can't change it as staying in a mobile home.  Is it really going to be that bad?   should we head off really early on the Sat if so how early?

The temptation is to push on the day\night before to travel down south and beat the traffic. I have thought about it mysef.   The thing is, we're a long time dead! Its not worth risking our lives and the lives of others by driving too long and too late to beat the traffic.

Is an extra day in the sun worth our lives? I have decided that it is not worth the cost of 1 extra overnight stop. We have the rest of our lives to go on holiday, let's take plenty of rest, let's drive safe and have a fab holiday.
