We don't! Never, in thirty-one years of travelling through France have we come anywhere near to running out of fuel, and I would be seriously worried about the risk of carrying a container of fuel in the car!

Had we been inclined to carry spare fuel, I would certainly have given the idea up after seeing a car incinerated on the M1 last week. Horrifying sight.
ferry companies don't like you taking spare fuel, some have it in their T+Cs and ask at check. I have been that red-faced person holding up the queue at check-in as I emptied the boot to find the can
Thanks for the feedback, don't think I'll bother, one thing less to carry. I've been looking on Google Earth and must admit the autoroutes in France and Spain seem to have plenty of well spaced fuel stations to top up.
And there are regular signs telling you the distance to the next two or three service stations, and the prices of fuel there - so you can judge when to stop and fill up.
Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!

think about coming home - a 5l can of fuel or 5l of wine .................
Now that's an easy decision - four wine boxes. .
On topic - if your fuel gauge is bust, and your odometer is broken (definately a Citroen) then figure two gallons an hour on the cruise, three gallons off the autoroute and you won't go far wrong. Up by a third for towing.

It definitly isnt bust, and my car might look like a Citroen but its more like a Mitsubishi.
