We have a 3 week holiday this year through France then Spain, I wondered if anyone takes a spare tank of fuel (5L or 10 L) or doesn't bother anymore?

We don't!  Never, in thirty-one years of travelling through France have we come anywhere near to running out of fuel, and I would be seriously worried about the risk of carrying a container of fuel in the car!

Had we been inclined to carry spare fuel, I would certainly have given the idea up after seeing a car incinerated on the M1 last week. Horrifying sight.

We carry a 10L Steel Jerry can of Diesel, just in case. I don't see any risk in it!

But I'm not sure the Ferry companies allow it.

I know the Tunnel is fine with certain Spare Fuel containers.

ferry companies don't like you taking spare fuel, some have it in their T+Cs and ask at check. I have been that red-faced person holding up the queue at check-in as I emptied the boot to find the can

Presumably an empty can will be ok then? Fill it up enroute then.

If your fuel gauge is reliable then you don't need to carry a spare can. If you've got a dodgy fuel gauge then use the mileometer.

If you've got both a dodgy fuel gauge and a dodgy mileometer then you must be driving a Citroen !

Thanks for the feedback, don't think I'll bother, one thing less to carry. I've been looking on Google Earth and must admit the autoroutes in France and Spain seem to have plenty of well spaced fuel stations to top up.

And there are regular signs telling you the distance to the next two or three service stations, and the prices of fuel there - so you can judge when to stop and fill up.

Now that's an easy decision - four wine boxes. .

On topic - if your fuel gauge is bust, and your odometer is broken (definately a Citroen) then figure two gallons an hour on the cruise, three gallons off the autoroute and you won't go far wrong.  Up by a third for towing.

It definitly isnt bust, and my car might look like a Citroen but its more like a Mitsubishi.
