Hi. I am planning to drive from Calais to Nerja in Andalucia, Spain in August, taking two weeks for the return journey with 3 children 15, 11 & 3 and will be camping en route. Can anyone advise on a scenic route where we can stop maybe 3 or 4 times on the way? I need to break the journey up for the kids and am thinking of not booking but seeing a campsite sign and going for it. I'd love to hear from someone who has perhaps made the journey before. My head has started to hurt just from trying to plot journey and match with cheaper campsites. Help please!

Hi,

We drove to Roses in Spain last year taking our time and stopped at Pierrefonds (Municipal Campsite) 145 miles from Dunkerque, there is a castle here which is the one they film Merlin (BBC1) From here we headed south of Claremont Ferrand about 350 miles (Le Bourg Camping camping63mdv at yahoo.fr, campsite was basic but very good and the scenery) From here we headed over the Millau Bridge to Narbonne 232 miles, plenty of campsites here. From Narbonne to Roses.

Our return journey was via Andorra where we stayed for one night got duty frees etc. Andorra Camping Valira www.campvalira.com

From here we headed north up over the pass into France to a site Camping La Plage De Verduzan, From here we headed to the Loire and stayed at Port St Maur basic information available on www.CampingFrance.com From here to Normandy and stayed at Cruelly Camping Des 3 Rivieres From here to Inchville and then back to Dunkerque.

This trip took 2 weeks and we only paid 1 toll and that was crossing the Millau Bridge.

Looking at where you intend to drive to you will be doing more miles per day than we did so possibly our route would be not that good.

The journey was 2642 miles from Wrexham to Wrexham.

Hope this helps

Bob

I'd do a really long first day, and stay one night in a budget hotel such as a Mister Bed (29 euros offer at the moment, for a room which sleeps three, with en suite), then get down to the more scenic parts of Southern France and have a day or two there.  For the five of you you'd need two rooms, which would cost more than a campsite but saves the hassle of unpacking and setting up the tent for a night in unspectactular scenery.

You could then have  a couple of days around the Millau area (577 miles from Calais) - or in the Gorges du Tarn (not all that far from the A75 (free) autoroute, off at junction 44a) - and find a cheap campsite by the river Tarn.  Many of the campsites along there have river beaches, and the scenery is absolutely spectacular, and if your children like wildlife it's a great area.  Just up the valley in the Gorge du Jonte vultures were reintroduced years ago, and you'll see them soaring over the valleys every day.  They are enormous.   The river Tarn has beaver, and if you're quiet at dusk you may be able to spot them swimming up or down river.

The municipal campsite in Le Rozier is a good standard, with a pool and river beach - and the high season charges (though higher than many municipal sites) are not bad.  There are lots of other sites all along the route to the Gorges du Tarn, and you'd have no problem finding a pitch.  There's also the municipal site in Aguessac which is fine, but doesn't have a pool.

From there you could be well down into Spain for the next overnight, or choose to stay somewhere along the Mediterranean.  We did have a look around Le Pepiniere (the website may take a time to load) in Grau d'Agde, and that's a site with good sized pitches, a nice toilet block, alongside the River Herault and is within walking distance of the beach at Grau d'Agde (nice safe family beach).  There's also a little ferry across to the beach at La Tamarissiere, which is really pretty, and quieter.  The prices were very modest compared to a lot of seaside sites.  I think it would be under 30 euros for the five of you.

From there you could do another stop somewhere along the Spanish coast (sorry can't help with this as we've been no further than Tarragona).

This campsite is lovely if you want somewhere different in Spain.  Can Coromines inland from Girona and not bad prices for Spain.  But you might need to ring to book as it's a way to go if they don't have a space for you.

There are loads of other campsites on the coasts but some are packed inlike sardines.

I don't want to put you off, because I love Andalucia, but Nerja is in the south of Spain and is a very long way to go in two weeks. However if you do go, a more direct route might be (roughly) via Rouen, Tours, Bordeaux, (for your first overnight stop),  cross into Spain somewhere near San Sebastian, then down the centre of Spain via Logrono and Madrid to Nerja.  The roads inland will be a lot faster than going down the coast.  But bear in mind it gets very hot inland in August, and I'm wondering if your three-year-old will cope.  If you still want Spain, but without going so far, you could stay somewhere near San Sebastian - there are some fabulous beaches on the Basque coast.  Or follow the itinerary of bbwales and choose one of the many sites on the Costa Brava.

Have to agree with iwalandi ... it's a long old haul for two weeks ... with kids ... I think you'll arrive home needing a new holiday to recover!

We've done the Andalucia trek, going down through Poitires (kids will live Futoroscope ... allow a day, campsite nearby) ... Bordeaux (use the N10, toll free and dual carriageway most of the way) ... Bordeaux (do a horse and carriage drive round the town centre sights) ... sanSebastian (arguably Spains best tapas) ... Bourgos ... then you can choose whether to go via Madrid or west of Madrid ... Segovia is lovely with its Aqueduct and Disneyesque castle .... also south of Madrid ... Toledo is a beaut ...

But it's all a long long way ... lots of fuel ... very hot down the middle ...

We came back uo the costas ... but you have to like the costa crowds ...

Why not aim for the north coast of Spain ... loads to do with wonderful beaches and the unmatchable Picos de Europa ... and, if you really fancy more driving ... go as far as Santaigo de Compostela.

Buen viaje!
