going through Luxembourg - Germany - Austria - Italy I did the St Gothard tunnel a few years back and it was a bit hairy to say the least. Just a 2 lane road and about 101/2 miles of total concentration. Decided to go the other way using the Fern pass into Austria and the Brenner into Italy, both of which are Ok to tow over. Maybe a bit slow with lorries in the week and cars at the weekend but hey its a holiday not a race. Also you only need a vignette in Austria for the car, you need one for car and caravan it switzerland. The route i'm using is toll free till Italy not counting vignette. Route is roughly dunkerque - Montmedy - Hohenstadt - Natterssee - Manerba Del Garda. Have a shufti on Viamichelin.

Madasman thats the route wee came back from garda last year as you say the brenner and fern pass are good for towing we stopped on the way back at camping riffler in landeck easy for the fern.Quiet campsite bar and restraunt opposite and supermarket,5 minute walk into the town. Only reason we going via switzerland is that the OH loves the place so we going thru that way and back so as to make full use of the vignette.Only wish the swiss woould do the same as Austria and do short term ones. Will have a look at montmedy on my way back up...thks for the info and have a good trip.
cheers for the campsite taffy i'll have a looksee. I'll be in montmedy on the 12th Sept on way down. Used the site last when the french in their wisdom decided people didn't need any fuel. Had to dive into germany to get fuel for the run back from Cernay, and some kind german guy gave me a 25 litre jack so i could carry some spare diesel. In fact i used that at the montmedy site and then got to calais ok. thought the site was OK then so will see if it's changed, can walk into the town for a meal or a takeaway. There was a pizza place i remember.
