I've just returned from a trip abroad where I unfortunately broke down. It took a week to resolve the problem but I spent a fortune making a receiving calls from UK & in the country I was visiting. Finally after burning £70 of credit on my phone I was forced to buy a local sim card which only cost £2.50 including some credit. It was great I could receive calls for free & calling locally only cost a few pence. Only downside was I had to keep swapping sims so I could receive SMS messages on my normal number. It would have been really useful to have my old phone which was sat at home in a draw. So on my next trip I will make sure I pack a 2nd phone in case this happens again.

I always keep an old phone and take it with me when visiting abroad. It saves a mint of money, remember to have all your phone numbers stored on the old mobile phone though, rather than the sim card.

I was in Croatia, just popped into the local Vodafone store(called VIP in Croatia). Calls were amazingly cheap with this VIP sim to anywhere in Europe only 5p per minute, makes you realise we pay to much for our mobile calls here.
Something worth noting you need to make 1 out going call to activate a sim card.
