My wife and I are planning a 2 week camping trip to Lake Garda, don't want to drive straight through, would like a stop in Germany about half way down and stop in France half way on the way back. If anyone as done this trip please share. We have 3 kids (14) (3) (1).

Black Forest has to be good for a short stay on the way down.....or Lucerne is also attractive.

Hi, we did this trip a few times in the past with kids. Most recently we stayed at Metz (in a Formula one I think. What I would recommend is fantastic services at Bellinzona in Switzerland - open air roof terrace overlooking mountains and great food, things like wonderful breads and salads (and cakes!). Not cheap for a service station but not service station quality, far better. It does take longer than you think from Calais and also the trip around the lake can take a while, as the road is busy with cars and people drifting about in holiday mode with sun loungers! If you entered at Sirmione and went up to Riva you would need a couple of hours. But - if you have never been to LG it is amazing, we have been at least a dozen times. If you need any info just ask as we know the area well. France for us this year although I just hope it lives up to LG....

We are off to garda five weeks today, we are stopping in belguim(adinkerke) as with a 5 hour journey to dover and 30 mins the other side that will be enough for the first day.Next day early start and we hope to get down as far as Obernai for a 2 day stop. From there its into Switzerland just the other side of the Gothard tunnel to stop for 2 nights. Then a nice leisurely drive into garda (Lazise). Intend to follow much the same route back as may as well make use of the vignette.Last Year we came back via Austria through the brenner but OH loves switzerland.Agree with kitkat lg is brilliant, we've done Como and Maggiorie but garda is the tops.Bit of a drive but well worth it ...enjoy

We did a similar trip in May, going from Calais via Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Austria and then over the Brenner Pass to the Trento area (it's not much further down the motorway from there to Garda.)  We avoided Switzerland because of the cost of the vignette.  We had three overnight stops, but that's because we were deliberately taking our time.  In the Black Forest we stopped at this campsite - www.camping-koenigskanzel.de - near Freudenstadt, which was very pleasant.

Coming back from Lake Garda we stopped overnight at Colmar. We didn't camp overnight but stayed in a hotel for the night.

We're starting the journey down there next week. Stopping in Koblenz (going to German F1 race!) then a week in Iffeldorf, Bavaria before heading to Garda.

On return trip going via Annecy for a week then an overnighter in a hotel in Troyes to split the journey back to the tunnel.

I'm off to Lake Garda in Sept going through Luxembourg -  Germany - Austria - Italy I did the St Gothard tunnel a few years back and it was a bit hairy to say the least. Just a 2 lane road and about 101/2 miles of total concentration. Decided to go the other way using the Fern pass into Austria and the Brenner into Italy, both of which are Ok to tow over. Maybe a bit slow with lorries in the week and cars at the weekend but hey its a holiday not a race. Also you only need a vignette in Austria for the car, you need one for car and caravan it switzerland. The route i'm using is toll free till Italy not counting vignette. Route is roughly dunkerque - Montmedy - Hohenstadt - Natterssee - Manerba Del Garda. Have a shufti on Viamichelin.

Apologies Naps for jumping in on your thread, just got a coupl of questions to others who have replied.

We are going 12 Aug Dover - Dunkirk then travelling through Belgium staying one night in Tintigny at a site we used last year, then the plan is to head through Switzerland and stay one more night before heading to Garda on day 3. We already have both vingettes so definately want to travel through Switzerland. Do any of you have any comments on this route, any ideas where we should look for our Swiss stopover and finally is Dunkirk to Garda a comfortable journey with a two night stop. There are two families, two caravans but kids are all teenagers.

Many thanks

We're going in a months time.

On the way up we're taking our time & getting a late crossing to Calais, then staying there that night.
Then on to Boppard, near Koblenz, for a few days.
Next a night at Europark, Rust / Black Forest.
Then 30 mins drive to somewhere else in the Black Forest for a week.
Finally, Lake Garda!

On the way back we're going straight from Lake Garda to Calais, stopping overnight at Metz.

Before extending our trip on the way there, we were just going to do a stopover for Europa Park (Rust, Germany). So I'd think the Black Forest area would be a good choice :)
