No - avoid the toll roads, and you'll save the cost of the toll roads and the transponder.  We regularly do Calais to the Med toll-free and it costs us nothing!  Outside peak season (mid-July to Mid-August) there's no advantage whatsoever in paying for one of these things when you can do the journey toll-free anyway - and even if you did pay for the tolls there are no queues at all!

Hi Val.

With all due respect, you tow a caravan, and tour mostly out of peak, for those that are travelling in peak and not towing a caravan, who wan't to get to there destination as quickly as possible, the TAG makes a lot of sense.

Last year, we whizzed past long ques just South of Lyon, thanks to the TAG and for us as we share our TAG with friends and family,  the £27 cost of the TAG has been zero,  apart from the £1.80 additional monthly charge for the use of the TAG so it has been a no brainer.

We don't all have the luxury of being able to meander along the RN roads to our chosen campsite, even using the Autoroutes, it takes us a good two days to get to the Southern Ardeche from home, a journey of 1000 miles.

At the end of the day it's different strokes for different folks.

We travel each year, late July to mid August, been in the 'long' queues but never had to wait more than 5 mins, normally only one or two cars in front.

I can't see the point of the extra hassle of organising the TAG. One thing that the SatNav has taught me is that how ever much you rush to get to a destination at best you only reduce your travelling time by about 5% at the most.

If we have to wait we spend the time looking at the other cars, lorries and caravans - becomes part of the holiday. The swimming pool isn't going to go anywhere if we are a few minutes 'late'.

I'm going to start a new thread regarding going toll free to the Med, as I did try to sit down with a map book and Viamichelin to hand and work out a route, needless to say my brain was frazzled and I gave up, lol!!!

I've replied on the Toll free to the Med post, but just edited this to say that if you're travelling on the 26th August I really don't think you'll experience any problems with traffic.
