Off on our fist trip to France with the caravan next week and I'm after a bit of advice.

We are travelling overnight Portsmouth - Caen. I'm assuming we can get breakfast on the ferry before we arrive but can't find anything about what they serve. DS has autism and severe learning difficulties and isn't very flexible with food so I need to know that we can get toast! Porridge or yoghurt would be good as well but not essential, defiantly don't want cooked breakfast. Can anyone tell me what they serve on the ferry, or in the terminal in Caen (assuming you can park there with a caravan after getting off the ferry)?

We are also taking the hamster with us (always rake him away with us, he has no problems travelling and is used to this) he will sped the ferry crossing in his cage in the caravan. There are no restriction on taking hamsters out or back in the country and Brittany Ferries seem to be OK with transporting them as long as they stay in the car / caravan but I can't see if I need to inform them about him or will be charged for taking him. Does anyone know? I know I should just call them but I only seem to get time to think about things like this late at night!

Your alternative would be to stop in the first decent lay-by and make breakfast in the van.

This is what we do when we go Hull/Rotterdam. saves a lot of money, and breakfast on the boat is served way too early for me!

Freeze some milk and juice cartons to have in the fridge. These will keep things cool, and will defrost just enough overnight to be useable in the morning.

They normally sell full English Breakfasts as well as continental's.  I think you can buy toast and maybe yoghourts.  (Try looking on the Ferry Website).  It might be an idea to take bread allthough some french supermarkets are now selling sliced bread.

regards Bob

Sorry can't help on the hamster front but I have done that crossing a few times now. They have a self- service restaurant which although is very French should have toast and yoghurt on offer from what I can recall. I understand the issue but just wondered if you've tried croissant for breakfast with your son - it may make life easier while you are away. My 9 year old is on the autistic spectrum and very routine - toast or porridge on school days but will try at weekends whatever we all have - full English, boiled eggs, croissant etc I do try to break the routine up a little so that whenever we go away the change is not totally alien.
Good luck - I'm sure you'll have a wonderful time!

Ruth

I came back from Caen on Saturday on the 8.30am crossing on Brittany ferries Mont Saint Michel. The cafeteria was busy but fast. Apart from the full english there was continental, croissants, jams etc. I didn't see porridge but there was yoghurt. Toast was included with the english breakfast so maybe they would sell it seperately.

As for the ferry port. It's quite small and so is the terminal building. I think i would give it a miss.

Ferry prices are expensive, could you take something on with you in a cool box, or stop at the next available intermarche once off the ferry?

Prices:

I was pleasantly suprised with the cafeteria prices, they were not expensive, certainly nowhere near what you would pay on a UK motorway service area. I can't remember exactly but I think the full english was £4.95 (€5.45) and continental was priced individually.

The coffee shop prices I did find expensive for what you get. Paper cups, paper plates and plastic cutlery.

After a full night on board and being relaxed I don't think I would want to stop at the first motor way services, they will be expensive.

Thanks for the replys. I would rather get food on the ferry if possible as DS will just try to get any food we take on board (will hide a few things in the bottom of the bag though). We travel with kit (table etc) on the floor of the caravan so difficult to use it during a journey. Sounds like we should be able to get food, just need to sort the hamster out now.
