Yep, Pistonheads does have a different perspective to on here!
I'd never take any decent camping equipment to the main Le Mans if staying on a track campsite. Many caravans end up as the ignition for the Sunday night site bonfire!
I think the Classic attracts a much different crowd though! Hence why it is increasingly popular.
Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!
I've done both on a number of occasions, the Classic is a much more civilised event and the campsites are much nicer.
We've always camped on Maison Blanche for the Classic, if you have to buy from a tour operator rather than from the ACO (www.lemans.org) you may find that you have to buy 2 over priced general admittance passes for each camping pass which can get expensive. Pitches are usually only 7m x 5m and you would usally need to get your car on the pitch as well as there are no guarantees of additional parking.
You'd want to take the usual event campsite precautions, keep all valuables locked away out of sight in a car boot and keep your car keys close to you overnight.
The Classic is lovely and I'd highly recommend it, it only happens on even years so the next one is 2012.
Being on circuit is great, especially if the weather is extreme, it's much nicer to have a base to go back to in the event of too much sun or rain (done both!). If you don't fancy that, the Municipal campsite at Spay is very nice, we've camped there a number of times either before or after LM events and it's only a few km away from the circuit.

The Classic is a definate for us.
I would like to go even more up market, hell that sounds snobish dunit lol.
I don't mind a drive to the circuit or even a shuttle as long as I don't have to battle to find a place to park or sit
