I don't know if it still applies, but some years ago when we stayed at Camping Internacional at Playa d'Aro several of our neighbours on the site had dogs, and took them on the beach across the bridge from the site.  That was low season though - and it is a while ago.

My sons enjoyed playing with Sammy the German labrador, with his jaunty T shirt and bandana!

I was interested in this so 'Googled' beaches which permit dogs - in Catalan (using Google Translate) and found the following: http://www.diaridegirona.cat/estiu/2010/07/22/gossos-platja/420675.html

Translated:

CASTELLON DE EMPÚRIES | ROBERT GÜELL want to go to the beach and can not. Not that the ban because they do not wear bathing suits, but because they are dogs. These pets also have fun while cooling with water from the beach. Or just when you walk and play with their owners. For some people, being on the beach and found a dog walking or even swimming can be annoying. But for others, not to go to the beach with your dog is an impediment to planning your vacation. And even decide the fate of vacation depending on whether there are beaches suitable for dogs. On the Costa Brava, but admitted there are few beaches where these animals.

The town hall of Castelló d'Empúries is the few who has taken steps to promote access for dogs in the sea. The beach Rubina has a space suitable for these animals so that they can swim with people. The Rubina, like most beaches on the Costa Brava, is frequented by Germans, Belgians and French, among others. The difference is, however, that a part of the beach also accept dogs.

Gavia Bradshaw, a Scot who lives in Figueres, a Catalan-speaking almost perfect, says he and his family always Rubina. The reason, says Eddy. "Without the dog is not going to the beach. Children are entertained well and the animal even more. He spends most of the time in the water and this is one of the few places where we go with the dog, "said Gaviria. "If we go to other beaches, people complain," he adds.

A faithful dog beach

The beach Rubina has loyal users. Marie, a French twenty years, spending the summer in Castellon Empúries admits that "whenever we come to the same place so we can come up with the dog." The same happens to Monica, a German who read a magazine lying on the sand while the dog plays with her husband in the water. Monica started to holiday on the Costa Brava for five years and the last four has always been with the dog. "It's fun. The fact that more dogs are allowed to play each other animals without problems, "he says. However, it also makes clear that "if there is a possibility that the dog is bathed on the beach, not vindríem."

We were in Spain in May and took the dog on to several beaches without any trouble.  We usually waited till we saw other dogs on the beach and chose quiet beaches in the morning or late afternoon. We were near Empuriabrava, that was the closest beach and we went lots of times. We walked her along the prom at Roses but not on the beach as that was a more popular and busier spot. The beaches near St Pere Pescador, outside La Gaviota campsite looked wild and windy and there were several dogs there. We avoid beaches which look "manicured" and we had no problems but it wasn't high season.

We were able to take our dog on the beach at la Manga - in fact we had to leave the dog on the beachward side of the wall whilst we sat on the other side on the terrace to have a drink, as dogs weren't allowed on the terrace. The waiters knew she was there, and didn't mind. There are actually quite a few stray dogs around Spanish beaches, and they can't read the notices apparently!

Hmm..This is a difficult one...don't want to book a campsite where the access to the beach would be a problem. We did see dogs on the beach in cote d'azur but maybe people were just risking it there also!

Yes, this is the area we're interested in but not if we're going to get jumped on by a 'keen' dog warden or other enforcement!

We have dutch friends at el delfin verde in costa brava who take their retreiver to the beach twice a day. They say that is why they go there as it is their dogs holiday as well. I know they go twice a day as the dog stops at our van on  the way back for a drink and a sausage, then lies down for a rest

Quote from a Spanish campsite.....

'The law in Spainn says that the dogs on the beach are not allowed.'

At least we know where we stand!!
