I'd say it depends on which sort of road you prefer. If the autoroute is free, then I'd be inclined to use that! Generally we try to travel toll-free - but that doesn't mean avoiding autoroutes where they are free.
Why not go one way on the way there, and try the other on the way back - then you can make up your own mind which was easier!
