I know! But it's the first week of the school holidays and everywhere is chockabloc! We want a pool and a bit going on, but not too busy. Am now investigating Provence.
I think that vacant pitches are out there. My head of Department emailed 3 sites down the south west coast of France yesterday and 2 of the 3 could fit him in next week. Keep looking and you will find something you like.

We went to camping Provencal in Vallon pont d'Arc, Ardeche last year which was a really nice family friendly site and was quite by about 11-11.30pm. We went without a booking and got in no problem but that was in August, details can be found at www.camping-le-provencal.fr might be worth giving them a call, 2 weeks will cost approx 700Euros. Wherever you go have a great holiday.
We may be in your situation in a couple of weeks! Thinking we may need a back up plan - just curious about if you've thought about heading down to the border of Spain though? I think we may go west rather than east if the weathers bad -then again - starting to think about Italy as a back up option now (bit bias towards Italy!) ! Completely sympathise with you - having spent a small fortune the last couple of years in England entertaining two kids in the rain I'm so hoping for an affordable holiday with decent weather!!!! Really really hope it turns out okay, keep us all posted if you can x
In the past we've been known to be heading to Italy, and ended up in Spain - when the forecast was really bad. We had brilliant weather in Spain, and Italy had torrential rain and landslips!
I hope it turns out better than expected, but apparently the Dordogne is awful at the moment - cold and heavy rain showers - a bit like a cold April day here!
