Yes, you can take what you want in the fridge - butter, milk, meat, and anything else that you want. Best way to keep it cool is to freeze something like a litre carton of orange juice, and put it into the fridge just before you set off. That way, along with connecting the fridge up to the car, via the hook-up, it will stay cool until you get to wherever you are going.
Customs won't stop you - or stop you carrying anything these days - in fact it's very unlikely that you'll come up against 'Customs' at all.
We usually take meals which I make at home, and freeze, and keep these in a cool bag or in the fridge, so that they can be heated up quickly once we arrive on site.
Your passport may be checked at Dover, and perhaps again when you land in France - but perhaps not even that..
