On a recent tour, we headed to this area to find the sea!  We were shocked to find that all the campsites were large, busy and very commercialised.  We stayed one night at an extortionate cost and then headed inland to see if we could find anything smaller, quieter and simpler,  We failed!

I know its peak season but £51 for one tiny pitch and all you could see are miles of statics etc.  We certainly couldn't get near a beach.  In the end we left disappointed as it seemed a lovely area with lots to explore.

Does anyone know of a site in this area (other than aires) which is quieter, is not all singing and dancing, but offers reasonable basic facilities please?  We would love to return.

we can recommend Les Ecureils at Biscarosse (nearer than the town than the beach) in 2008 and cant remember paying that much. Its a nice site, family owned and whilst there were some statics they were in one area and the camping pitches in the other. Just looked at in peak season its 44 euros a night for 2 adults and electric. Only downsides imo were some road noise pitched nearer the road and we did hear loud music from neighbouring sites one night (I remember us both lying there laughing as somebody murdered another song).

Tbh alot of sites we've looked at all over France for this summer seem expensive, I guess its the poor exchange rate as I dont remember pitch fees being so high.

Allengenealogy, a very great thanks for that webpage. I've now bookmarked it as we don't ever book overnight stays, but stayed at a very dodgy campsite last year. Our fault; we didn't check it out beforehand, just paid the money and pitched. Then we looked at the loos, etc. Horrible. Don't know how they could charge for using it. Pitches horrible, too. It was only for one night, though, but I did resent paying about 30 Euros for 2A, 3C in late August.

I'm going to see about where we'll be after one day's driving and check that website out.
