Hi, Family of 5 thinking of heading to France Aug28- Sept11 pitching a tent.
We would stay close to Calias to save on deisel (and time kids spend cooked up in car) However if there is little Sun we would head further south (Cavalaire sur mer?) in the hope if increased likely hood of Sun.
Because we are uncertain of our traveling itenery my question is:
during this time in the holiday calender is it safe head off without booking? or is it unlikely that we could just book whilst on the road, and just turn up to pitch our (just under 7m, 6 man) tent?
Thanks for your help and information. Please do not hesitate to reply if you have any advice you think would be appropriate.
Happy Camping...

The French kids go back to school around 5th September and most of the British ones will have returned home so the sites will be fairly empty. Last year we went to Bayeux and didn't book around the 22nd August. You should be fine.
I wouldnt book, the sites will be quiet and you dont know whats going to happen with the weather. That way you can follow the sun.
I only wish I'd realised the kids dont go back to school til the 7th Sept here as we'd definetly have gone later (we're off next week) and come back later. The sites are much cheaper from the last week of August and we've had brilliant weather at the end of August.

Don't book - just follow the sun! Definitely. You won't have any problems, and if you use Camping Cheques (www.campingcheque.co.uk) or an ACSI card (www.campingcard.co.uk) you may save a lot of money too on sites which take them on your dates. Prices of a pitch for two people, car and caravan (or tent or motorhome), awning, and electricity are between 11 and 15 euros with ACSI and £13.95 with Camping Cheques. Some sites also do 7 nights for the price of 6.
If you have children under 6 then the ACSI card also includes three under 6's on some sites (check out the website for details).
Nothing worse than booking a site, to find it's in the only area in France with rain!
Hi jaymac, I reguarly look at the term dates online, just dont know how I missed the fact they go back later than usual. I'm so annoyed with myself, could have had a real bargain 2 weeks.

We recently just turned up at the Municipal site in Eu, 100 miles south of Calais, a lovely little site in the grounds of the chateau, and a 5 minute walk into town. We used it for a one night stay before coming home - - 12 euros for our motorhome, electricity, and our dog. Free wi-fi as well. Good luck.

We have just returned from a 3 week trip to France 2 adults and 2 children never booked a site and just turned up. We never got turned away once and we used from basic to all singing all dancing type sites.
