Hi
I am trying to decide whether to camp in France or Cornwall next week (from Wednesday). I've been to static caravans in France but never taken my tent. I'm looking for reasonable weather (aren't we all?) but I'm sure there will be other 'factors' I've overlooked. I know I can't get an overnight cabin on Portsmouth/St Malo though.

Please could anyone give me ideas/the benefit of their experience/a crystal weather-forecasting ball.
Thanks

We are heading of to poitou charente region, has its own micr climate. about 6 hours from Caen. We like it, every day was sunny and hot last year - some days 32 deg.

If you have the cash personally I would goto France.

Good luck in your quest

There is more than 1 option to get across to France

Much as I love Cornwall and have had some great camping trips there, France would always get my vote (assuming money isn't a key issue here). In general, you have more chance of good weather and I much prefer French campsites and the freedom of not having to book everything months in advance.

Do you have a particular region in mind? If the weather is what's putting you off Cornwall it might be best not to chance Brittany (which can often be very similar to Cornwall)and to head at least as far as the Loire, if not a little further.

Other crossing options to consider could be the Poole- Cherbourg fast ferry , Portsmouth-Caen or Plymouth Roscoff with Brittany Ferries , the Poole St Malo crossing with Condor Ferries or Portsmouth- le Havre with  LD lines

Thanks for that Lou. I'll look up Piotou Charente, though I don't function at 30 degrees or above! The British summer without rain is the ideal temp for me.javascript:AddSmileyIcon('')

I was wondering about France v Cornwall as friends of ours have been washed out several years running in France and at least Cornwall is set up for bad weather eg cinema/Eden project/indoor activities.
It's good to know, Ced, that I might not have missed out by not booking ages in advance. I was worried about that.
Also thanks for listing those crossings.

I tend to agree with you regarding the UK being more geared up towards poor weather ie cinema complexes, bowling, indoor playareas, swimming pools etc. I've found that to be honest if the weather is poor in France (or anywhere like Italy, Spain etc) then there isn't much to do. However if the weather is good - France rather than Cornwall as it is cheaper because you can have picnics and sit by the pool. Not sure about this year though.....although the weather today in Kent has been poor too!

Mine too.  Last time we went to Cornwall we revisited Newquay, which was a regular haunt in our twenties, and found it quite a depressing place these days.  I'm sure there are lovely parts, but we had to pay a fortune to park almost anywhere else in Cornwall that we visited (Fowey, Mevagissey, Lostwithiel, the Eden Project, Padstow - amongst others).  We must have spent more on parking than almost anything else!

Thanks Warbis!!!

I've been back to sleep after those posts!!!!  I couldn't sleep earlier, and OH was snoring, so I got up and made a cuppa, then replied to Lilyjoy and a few posts, and then went back to bed to sleep soundly until 7.30!   I was in bed early too, after all the picking, carrying, chopping and stoning!!!!   He, of course, is still asleep - and at least we've no work to go to these days - though we have loads to do today!
