Hi, I am going to Annecy next year in France but have never towed abroad before. I am not sure on the licensing laws in France. I have not done my B plus E test but have a full license that I have held for 6 years (by the time I go). I am only 23 as well so don't know if there is anything I need to be careful of? Sorry if this sounds a very silly question but thought its better to be safe than sorry.

If you're a full license holder in the UK, you won't have a problem over here in France. Have a great holiday. :)

From the Direct.gov website:

Car driving licence first obtained since 1 January 1997
Drivers who passed a car test on or after 1 January 1997 are required to pass an additional driving test in order to gain entitlement to category B + E and all larger vehicles. In addition to the new driving tests, drivers of vehicles which fall within subcategories C1, C1 + E, D1 and D1 + E also have to meet higher medical standards.

So, in my opinion if you're not entitled to tow over here, then you can't do it in France because your licence doesn't allow it.

Your are restricted to 3500kg gross weight car+caravan combination
In simple terms if your caravan max loaded weight(MPTLM figure) + Your Mondeos max loaded weight exceed 3500kg your illegal to drive this combination of car and caravan
Dont go by your Mondeos kerbweight its the maximum permitted weight is the all important figure .
Also if your caravan has a MPTLM higher than your cars kerbweight you cannot legally tow it even if it within your cars towing capacity IF you passed your test after 1997 ( " FACT ")

According to the code de la route a B licence is OK if the trailer is less than 750 KG but a B=E is required if the combined weight of the vehicle and trailer is more than 3500Kg and the weight of the trailer is more than the weight of the towing vehicle.

Charlie,

A lot of confusion is caused by peoples different interpretations of Government jargon and towing rules are no exception.

The above post just about sums it up in a nutshell. The maximum weight you can legally tow on your licence (B) is shown above. Only over this will you need a B + E.

Looking at your outfit there is no way it will be anywhere near 3500kg. Lunars are fairly lightweight in your model. And this is only a guess but I doubt your van will come anywhere near 1400kgs so the allownace for the towing vehicle will be 2100kgs and your Mondeo is nowhere near this. So don't worry your "B" licence will be OK even in this country.

Sorry forgot to add details of the outfit. It is a car (Mondeo) and a Lunar which weighs 1350Kg fully laden. The kerbweight of the Mondeo is about 1600Kg. From the reading above seems like I will be ok. Thanks
