sounds brilliant Fiona. Will have to bite the bullet and pay those pitch prices (ouch!). Are the activities free and can you find out what date they run to as we would be there the last two weeks in August although could go earlier.
Sure you will enjoy the wine tasting. Now go and enjoy your holiday and tell me when you get back!

Is the ardeche a good area for younger children (8&5)? They're too young / not good enough swimmers to do the river canoeing type activities etc.
My youngest is 7 and not really swimming yet. She had a great time floating around in a rubber ring, fishing for tiddlers with her net, paddling and making towers with the big pebbles, "swimming" with Mummy & Daddy, and so on. We didn't canoe as we didn't have time with everything else we were doing! Lots of the beaches have quite extensive shallows that are really safe, at one I put my deckchair in the water and had it lapping at my feet as it was so hot and she played around me. I'd definitely consider it with childen the age of yours.

Absolutely. We saw children of all ages at all the rivers we went to last year. There are usually some shallow bits in the rivers. Great for splashing about.
Oh yes our kids are 7&4 and it's my son who is 4 who is most fascinated right now by the river. There are young children with fishing nets and in inflatables or with toy boats just playing in the water. They have their new pals and scooters plus play area we are already planning a return next year that's a first, will bring bikes next year I think.
I'm so glad to hear the magic is rubbing off on you and your children Fiona! I know it did on my sons, who loved it from being very small children (2 and 8) to their teenage years! We met many families there who used to go back year after year, and our sons became friends with Dutch children/teenagers whom they still keep in touch with.
I suppose that's why prices are high!

We are coming to l'ardechois on Monday 15th and just read your last post and notice you say you would bring bikes next year. We normally bring our bikes but was not sure whether to bother this year. Do you think they be handy for getting around the site and is it safe to cycle into town. We have 17 and 14 year old boys who will probably want to take themselves off but wife will worry if roads are a bit mad.
Can't wait to be there - glad you are enjoying it!

I know this is addressed to Fiona, but my sons always took bikes when we went - and used them both around the site, and to cycle around locally. If they're trustworthy at home, and sensible, and know how to 'drive' on the wrong side, then they should be fine
We were at L'Ardechois for 10 days from 18th July. We were really lucky as we were allocated a riverside pitch. It really poured with rain on the early morning of the 19th but we still managed to make our way to watch the Tour de France. The sun came out and we had a glorious day.
It is a great site in a fantastic location and I would definitely recommend bikes for exploring the area and for nipping into the town for shopping, although the little fruit and veg shop in Salavas was the best for fruit and veg.
I will get round to providing a review and posting more pictures in the future but in the meantime here's a couple for starters.
View of the campsite...
View from our pitch along the south eastern edge of the river...

Where did you take the photograph? I remember seeing shots of yours from the Tarn which are similar to ours - we obviously tread the same paths but I don't think we've done that bit! We did take a photograph from Vieux Vallon, looking down on the site, but that's at the other side of the river.
We've once had a pitch on the riverside - some years ago - and I agree, they are in a lovely position. The river level still looks pretty low though. One year when we were there it rose well upthe sloping bank shown in your photo, after a very heavy storm further up in the mountains. It soon went down again though!
Hi yes definitely take bikes all the kids have them, the roads into vallon I think would be safe for children of 14+ although there is a very steep incline. But we haven't looked into cycle routes in the immediate area. Temperatures have really picked up here now and hitting 30degs but pitches are well shaded so unless you are by pool or river it's very pleasant. My daughter was a tiger in the 'show' last night and Tom the clown is teaching them tricks at a clowns workshop and he's performing at the bar later - there's so much going on for the kids that we find it hard to squeeze our meals in!!!
This looks such a lovely area. We came back from The Loire last week after another great experience (apart from the campervan gearbox packing up on the way home). Have now decided I prefer the wilder areas more apparent in the south. Its definitely the Ardeche next time.
There are some good deals at the moment for 2012 off season...... blimey 2012 plans already. Glad everyone seems to be having a good old time!

Hi Val
The picture was taken from the hill in the background of the photo below. It's part of a nice walk from Salavas which has some great views. We have also done the walk up to Vieux Vallon but was surprised how unused that path is. The Vieux Vallon ruins at the top are interesting and it is a shame nothing is made of it.

Thanks Ollie - we may be down that way again shortly, so may try the walk from Salavas.
We walked up through Vieux Vallon on one of the campsite guided walks, then across a lovely valley, and ended up at a farm/vineyard, where we spent some time wine tasting! Lovely!
