Speedos are just a brand of swimming trunks. Some big some brief and a lot more appropriate for swimming in. Can't see the problem.
Brief for me or nothing at all of choice. The sensible way to swim.

Very true, the same way that people call vacuum cleaners 'Hoovers'. I prefer the term 'budgie smugglers' for these kinds of swim trunks (LOL).
Anyway, i don't see a problem with wearing these myself, it isn't as if everyone is looking at you after all.

Teach a man to fish and he'll sit around on a boat all day drinking beer!
my hubby is not looking forward to wearing his , but he accepts that that is the rules and he likes swimming too much to be too put off . my boys love their new trunks as they have spiderman on them so there wont be a problem there !

I can't understand the shorts thing myself...how uncomfortable to have a pair of baggy wet shorts flapping about your legs when you get out of the pool...trunks dry out in no time.
It wasn't enforced where we were this year, but last year I saw several people getting hoiked out...they even had a vending machine in the bar selling trunks for those that didn't come with them.
I am married to an American Puritan who wore typical American swimming shorts that balloon out when in the water. He always wore his underwear too, which I thought was disgusting. When we went away last year I deliberately left his shorts behind so when we encountered scorching hot weather he had to buy some tight fitting swimmers he wore his underwear as usual. I noticed however that last time he went swimming he had discarded his underwear.
When I was young in the sixties all men wore swimming trunks which were barely bigger than the budgies smugglers, the lycra shorts men wear today are much more covering. The kids here all pull the backs of their shorts down anyway when going down the slides as a bare bottom makes them go faster.
I understand teens feeing everyone is watching them, but surely grown men know that everyone else is far too focused on themselves to watch what you are wearing or even care.
Well, did anyone get thrown out for not wearing speedos this year? Happened to my OH last year, but ok this year.
One thing I did notice was lots of babies and toddlers in the pool without swimming nappies on. In our local pool this is a no no, even ordinary nappies aren't allowed. Think this is more yukky than a few blokes in swimming shorts.

Swimming nappies are a relatively new invention designed to take more of your hard earned money.
When my children were that age (not that long ago) you just had to be alert and watch out for the tell tale facial expression and get them out of the pool PDQ.

When my sons were young disposable nappies were just not available - and terry towelling nappies are obviously not ideal for swimming pools - so like everyone else little babies wore 'swimming costumes' for girls and 'speedos' for boys or nothing at all!
Italy - swimming hats a well! (Torre de Pendent site in Pisa). Charge you 2.50 euros for the pleasure as well - luckily we anticipated this and bought our own from home.
Could upload a lovely picture of my dad and husband wearing the hats but not sure how to upload photos - sorry. ;-)
