We did this 20+ years ago with a tent. Norway, Finland, Sweden & Denmark. As it's so long ago I have no idea of current costs, but can say that Scandanavia is a great place to tour. We saw numerous campervans, particularly German ones.
We had a little gem of a book "Motoring in Norway" which gave route descriptions and what to see.
We never had a problem finding campsites; each day we had an idea of where we were heading and had researched possible sites....by lists from tourist offices....no internet then! We camped next to glacial lakes; frozen lakes; fjords and what seemed like the campsite owners garden once!!
We took the now stopped Newcastle-Stavanger/Bergen ferry out; crossed from Turhu-Stockholm and Esjberg-Harwich. We also crossed by ferry from Sweden-Denmark, but I think a bridge has been built since.
We used numerous internal ferries around the Fjords. Driving was never a problem and the Scandanavians seem to have a good life/work balance....head out into the country Friday pm for the weekend! Despite this we never had a problem finding a pitch. We spent a Saturday afternoon in Helsinki...it seemed busy when we drove in, but from mid day the roads were almost deserted...........this was 1988 so I've no idea if it's still the same!
Hopefully someone else can provide some more up to date info, Scandanavia wasn't cheap then and I can't see that having changed!
