Kelper's right, going westwards along the north coast will take you off route if you're heading for Madrid, but not necessarily so if you're heading west of Madrid and ultimately to the Sevilla/Cádiz area. It depends what route you want to take and what you want to see/do on the way south. And of course, booking ahead for late arrival is an option, assuming the campsite will let you book ahead. We've been having problems finding campsites up here in Asturias that will actually take a booking this summer, but then we've got a tent and often campsites consider tenters as the poor relatives, so to speak, in peak season, .
Near the city of Salamanca, there are two campsites that I know of.. Camping Don Quijote, which I can't speak for, and Camping Ruta de la Plata, which is small and (back in 2008) was not the best of campsites but would be okay for one night or two. If I remember rightly, this one is somewhere near the Autovía Ruta de la Plata. And as Kelper says, Salamanca is well worth a visit.. not only the Plaza Mayor, but the two cathedrals (one of the best altars I've ever seen is in the old cathedral), the Casa de las Conchas (House of Shells, has shell shapes on the façade), the University building with its toad and skull.. etc etc..and then there's the lentils from Armuña..best lentils I've ever had, just lentils with nothing added, with a menu of the day...
My god, I think I should work for the Spanish Tourist Office!!
