Toying with ideas for 2012. I'd like to go to Brittany as I gather it's very pretty although I'm unsure as we like nice weather. I don't know much about the northern vs southern coasts - is there much of a difference?

we've been to north and south and we much prefer the south. Favourite areas are around Carnac and the area round Quimper. Carnac area has better weather than elsewhere in Brittany.

Another vote for Carnac we had very warm weather in 2005,2006 and 2007 .
Lots of good campsites , Camping Le Moustoir gets my vote

Definately the south. I would recommend Domaine le Bohat and Mane-Guernehue as sites if you have children.

Not a massive difference, but I would strongly commend area round Roscoff, St Pol de Lyon, and then Perros Guirrec ( forgive the spellings if they are rubbish but you will find the places on Google ). Port L'Epine is a good base for a weeks sight seeing, and then do a 2 centre with Morbihan. Luvly jubbly

Agree with Perros Guirec stunning coastline! Roscoff and St Pol de Lyon ate beautiful as is Lannion and Guingamp.

zoo-tregomeur.com/ This is the best zoo I have ever been to!

St Malo is a must see aswell

(Parent live in Belle-isle-en-terre during winter so i know the north east quite well)

We are regular visitors to Brittany and often spend half our time on the south coast and half on the north. Which area you prefer very much depends upon what you look for in a holiday.  The south can be warmer by 3-5 =degrees and both areas have some lovely towns and villages to visit as well as good beaches. For us I would agree with the last couple of posters with regards to the Perros guirec area - the coastline around here is absolutely stunning, along with the coast towards Cap Frehel.

Have stayed in both areas but for scenery you can't beat the north - the Cote du Granit Rose and the Sentier des Douaniers are fabulous.

North coast is like Cornwall, quite rocky and dramatic with some beautiful sandy beaches. We stayed at St Cast and visited: Mont St Michel, Dinan, Erquy, Cap Frehel, Forte la Latte, Lamballe, St Malo.  Roscoff and St Pol De Leon are pretty too if you use the ferry there. Weather a bit mixed but generally good and better than the Uk

West Brittany - our favourite area: Stayed at Camping de la Piscine near Fouesnant, great beaches just down the road. Visited: Quimper, Benodet, Pont Aven, Pointe du Raz, Concarneau and loads of other pretty villages.  Maybe a degree or so warmer than the north coast - this year it was between 20 - 30 deg and 4 lots of rain over 2 1/2 weeks.

South Brittany we stayed at Mane-Guernhue at Baden nice site and we had a huge pitch. Visited: Vannes & Auray both very nice, Quiberon, the Menhirs, Carnac - too touristy for us. We had the worst weather here compared to the other areas, so windy and changeable - mid 20's when the sun shone.

Brittany is lovely even though sunshine is not guaranteed, but much of France had bad weather this year and from what we heard Brittany did very well.

Leggy is right about the weather. The south of Brittany, and specifically the south east has average temperatures which are distinctly higher than the north east. Ive poured over climate/weather charts and made numerous comparisons and the difference between say Brest with Nantes (close to Brittany!) is marked. The reason for this is the atlantic weather front, more associated with Vendee and the Royan area which actually affects the south east coast of Brittany.

Brittany isn't lovely its FABULOUS. The north and south coasts are superb, different but stunning. The interior is full of lovely villages each a little different. Scenery is green and magnificent. BUT the reason the scenery is so gorgeous is it rains. OH says it rains a little every day, but he is known for exaggeration. Although it does always rain when I drive into Finistere, we live in Cote D'Armor. So let me know if you are going there and I will stay away

South is warmer than the north and I would endorse the recommendation for Mene Guernhue. We were hoping to go to Les Embruns which I hear is great, but Grandson's sporting life got in the way. Carnac is OK but very crowded so is Perros Guirec, last time we went there it was so crowded we couldn't find parking so drove somewhere else. Nice coast line there, the schools take kids there for a week to learn about the sea.
