I've done this trip on numerous occasions, but the only time I have managed it in one go was in '97 when I was solo in my austin healey sprite. Other times when towing or in the M/H I have always had to make an overnight stop.

Good overnight handy campsites at...... Neufchatel En Bray (sth).........St Remy de L'Eglise.........Igoville ( Rouen).

since then the route from Rouen/Orleans has been greatly improved up to Autoroute (A154 ) standards, with further stretches being opened.

Artic, Yes those places I mentioned are a real must .....Other sightseeing spots worth a visit in the Dordogne are Domme, not far from Sarlat & Beynac.......St Cyprien Interesting town has quite nice market.. Nearby a stroll around Berbiguieres, a fine chateau privately owned by an English Lawyer. close to which is a nice campsite La Cro Magnon. but its' 'style' has recently changed  as may it's name, it is a very clean, peaceful site, beautiful views overlooking the river, http://www.eurocampindependent.co.uk/campsite3.asp?sitecode=%22DR82E%22   now a Eurocamp, I think still managed by the previous owners Ed & Liduin...................The Le Cro Magnon Caves are also a must.

Earlier I said Orador was near to Limousin. I should have said Limoges.  D2000-N141-D9

Doddy - I did Calais to Sarlat last year in one go.  Arrived at Calais about 0500 CET and set off planning to stop overnight half way there.  Weather and roads so good that I just pushed on and arrived in Sarlat at about 1630 CET.  Looking back it was one hell of a journey and I am not sure I would do it again in one go.  I use the Abbeville Chartres Orleans Limoge route mentioned in an earlier post.  I tow at about 70mph on A roads and between 50 - 60 on N roads.  I stopped every 2 to 2.5 hours for fuel and coffee.  Unless you really like driving and can do long hauls then suggest you break the journey.

Artic If in the Sarlat are check Chateux's Beynac and Castlenaud - both excellent days out.  Also try to visit the Roque St Christopher the cave village. If you don't mind travelling a bit further afield try St Cirq Lapopie and Rocamadour - both spectacular villages that will take your breath away.  In the case of Rocamadour quite literllay after you have climbed the 200 + steps to the church.  Bon voyage.

Bev + John - Wlee sums it up.  Beautiful green countryside with plenty of warm days. In 2004 we went to Sarlat on 10 Aug and returned 3 weeks later.  Most days were sunny with a temperature between 25 and 27C.  You can expect the occaisional thunderstorm usually in the evening - they can be quite spectacular with lightning and loads of noise.  Toward the end of Aug the mornings and evenings can be a bit chilly - you normally wake to a heavy dew however, sun soon burns that off. June might be a bit similar.

The area itself has a huge amount of attractions - too many for us in 3 weeks.  That's why we are going back again this year.  However, this time we are going to Normandy for a couple of days first for the WWII sites before pushing on for Sarlat.

PS in 2003 we went to Cahors area - avg temp 35C!  We "chose" to drive from Le Mans to Cahors on the hottest day in western europe in living memory.  It was 42C and we weren't using the air-con!!!  Absolutely knackering.  The Lot Valley is a lovely area as well and is well worth considering.

It can be hot in the Dordogne too, but a lot depends on the specific valley and the campsite you chose. At St Julien de Lampon (municipal) and the surrounding part of the valley it was much warmer than were we stayed in the valley of the Vézère. We also had a perfect campsite (a farm with lots of shadow, lush grass...). In St Julien de Lampon, on the other hand they had a lot of trees lined up, so we had enough shade. The soil and non-tree covered part of the site showed signs of draught though as more fields in the area did. The site have the big advantage of being positioned on the Dordogne itself. Another site just a kilometer further has a lush microclimate again.

I must say though that since last year heat has a different meaning for me, as on business travel I experenced temperatures from 45C to 50C measured in the shade. Overthere 45C was the average temperature normal at that location and the local judged temperatures at tha particular period as extremely hot (Eritrea: Massawa).

Mid to late june is perfect. Not that crowded yet, so better access to some of the touristic sites like the Roc Cristophe.

Hi Bev and jon,

We are also hoping to be in the Dorgone in June, we are hoping to do a bit of touring on the way down not in any rush.

May bump into you  you never know.
