Austria is one of our favorite countries and we have found the people friendly. Camping Natterersee, as mentioned above, is in a lovely location and we have stayed there twice over the years. It does really depend how far into Austria you want to travel. We stayed at a nice little site in Stams but it might not have enough for children.
Tyrol area is lovely too, not camped there but been in a gazillion hotels over the years. Always found the country to be clean and tidy and the people very friendly. Holidayed alone many many times and never, ever felt threatened in any way.
It isn't a cheap country but you can go to the supermarket and get rolls, ham and cheese etc and take a picnic out each day for lunch.
Do go, you won't regret it.

We spent some time this year at Park Grubhof in St martin Bie Lofer, I would highly recommend this site it has everything that you could need or want. The area is very interesting it is within an hour drive of Salzburg, The Grossglochner (a wonderful mountain pass which is a spectacular drive)many very pretty villages.
Thanks jonbo, see from your reviews that you have been to Capeyrou in Beynac. We loved this site and have left review too. it was so beautiful, we're worried about next year not living up to it!!!
thanks everyone else, site looks lovely. Will keep looking and all advice gratefully received!

We would also highly recommend Natterersee. The best showers we have ever come across. The views are stunning and it is so handy for the beautiful city of Innsbruck.
Our daughters are 12 and 10 and they loved it there. The campsite pitch prices are on the expensive side but worth it. We found eating out and supermarket prices similar to at home.

Can recommend the site below - right beside beautiful lake - great for swimming - water sports for older children and trampolines, play area for younger children. I have done a campsite review on the review section.
