Just wondered if anybody had camped in Hungary - always on the look out for somewhere new so would be very keen on your thoughts/views. Many thanks :-)

Summer 2016 Camping las Dunas, Spain
Woop Woop I won £50 of Halfords vouchers for one of my camp site reviews - make sure you do yours!

Saw it on Coach Trip the other night and thought it looked nice. Very like the Czech Republic where we ended up this year and we really enjoyed it there. I see you were also in Austria - we loved it there and after seeing Coach Trip my first thought was to go back to Austria then onto Hungary. Not next year though, we have other plans for that!
Budapest is wonderful and I personally far preferred it to Prague. Have some ideas and arrangements for France next summer ( half camping, dependent on agreement of OH and half home exchange) but also interested in thinking about Lake Balaton for 2013, perhaps in combination with Budapest and inspired by feeblecat's blog re Czech Republic. The sites I have seen online in Balaton look big but there must be a variety. Also interested in hearing any recommendations for a middle aged couple, fussy about cleanliness of bathroom facilities, but otherwise enjoying quiet places.
We rented a house near Lake Balaton a few years ago, there were campsites on the lake front. We got the train to Budapest one day as well.
We flew in on Ryanair and hired a car, there was quite a lot to do. We found things likes caves, castles, outdoor spa etc all from the tourist info places.
We passed through Hungary 3 years ago and stayed in a campsite near Debrecen, the Dorcas Christian Centre - we were a bit worried that it would be terribly religious but it wasn't at all. However the showers were completely open, not even a curtain between them, so it wouldn't do for shy people! However this wasn't in a tourist area and I'm sure that campsites elsewhere, eg Lake Balaton etc, would have better facilities.
A couple of things to bear in mind - the roads are often in quite a poor condition, and the temperature in summer can be very hot indeed. We also found interpreting road signs quite difficult as Hungarian doesn't resemble any language we've come across!

Follow the Danube loads of site along the river all the way to Budapest . Ega north of Budapest is worth a visit . We cycled through Hungary on our way round the world in 97 loved it . We stayed on a site near the Austrian border turn out to be a brothel ! The site at Ega was a real memorie as we got there on my birthday. As we were putting up our tent, the campsite owner came over & gave me a bottle of wine
