Hi all, my first ever post so please bear with me if this has been asked before!

We are planning on going to Camping San Francesco on Lake Garda for our main summer holiday in 2012 and was wondering if any members had knowledge of:

1. Overnight stops on the way - France/Switzerland - we are using the tunnel and will look to travel around 250 - 300 miles per day in mainland Europe, taking 3 days and 2 overnight stops to get there.

2. Camping San Francesco - I've only seen good reviews but any other first hand info would be good.

Hopefully somone will have some feedback for us.

Thanks

You could travel via Belgium, Germany, Austria (Brenner) without many toll charges. We did this last year.
You could stop near Saarbrucken (?) then again near Innsbruck. Both around 320 miles, then a shorter hop (170 miles?) to get to your chosen site.
I must add the first is not a stop that we did, we stopped in Belgium nr Luxembourg border, then Neu Ulm and Innsbruck as our friends didn't like driving so far in a day.

Hi we stayed at San Francesco a couple of years ago and we loved it, pitches are not very big but adequate. Toilets and showers immaculate and plenty of them. Cleaners maintaining them constantly all day long.

I went to Camping Baia Verde this year, we travelled from Dunkerque to Montmedy for first night(site reviewed) then through lower part of Luxembourg into Germany and stopped at Illertissen (site reviewed) then on to site in Italy at lake Garda using Fern and Brenner passes. We travelled on these on a Sunday and for whatever reason it was choc a block, so we decided to go back through Switzerland. Had to buy 2 Vignettes at a cost of 80 Euros and used the St Gothard tunnel. This was a breeze and we reached Eguishein in the Alsace in one day, stayed for 2 days as it was such a great little town. (site reviewed), Then went on to Neufchateau(site reviewed) in Belgium for one night before travelling to Bien assise for last night before coming home. Way down was virtually toll free, way back had to pay some road tolls and the vignettes, but tried to stick to free motorways where possible.

Many thanks to everyone...will look to arrange a route which balances cost vs convenience.

We went to Lake Garda in August, as part of a longer circular route trip.

Eurotunnel - Koblenz, Germany - Iffeldorf, Germany - Lake Garda - (via Frejus Tunnel) Annecy - Troyes, France - Eurotunnel.

Both outward and return routes were fine and delay / hassle free.  If we were going just to Lake Garda in future we would pay the tolls and go through France.  Much quieter motorway and for us (towing a folding camper) a significantly higher towing speed limit when in France (130km/h vs 80km/h) so journey time massively reduced.

We considered San Francesco but went to Campeggio Gasparina, I've submitted a review but it's still not gone live, in summary we'll be going back ASAP.

Thanks njones

I think France will be the best option if we can find overnight stops en route...cost is a factor but not the main consideration as we are travelling in convoy with 2 other familes who have slightly younger children than our own...9 & 9 as comapired to our own 2 teenagers who probably moan more than the little ones...C'est la vie!!!

First overnight isn't an issue (Joinville, La Forge De Ste Marie) but finding somewhere around 250 miles to Garda which has single night stops in high season is proving more problematic!

Lovely site at Eguisheim in the Alsace, Camping les trois chateau but this would leave you about 320 miles to go. Fabulous little town, with lots of vintners most with free tastings Mmmmmm.

We went to Lake Garda this year from France. Ist night near Calais, (we slept in the services as we arrived late).
2nd night Langres, 3rd night Macon. The next day was a Sunday, and we drove motorway via Lyon, Chambery, Frejus tunnel, Turin, Milan in the day, arriving at 6pm. You would be sooner, as we went round to Bardolino (and got lost too!) The tolls were expensive, but we wanted to cross Italy in the day. On the way back we were on our way to the Cote d'Azur, so just headed straight down to Genoa, then round the coast. That journey only cost us e36, and was stunning scenery at the coast.
