We don't know which is the best crossing, either Portsmouth-St Malo or go Portsmouth-Bilboa/Santander. We will probably do an overnight stop when we get off the boat, and set off next day to Portugal. If anyone knows sites near beaches in the north of the country that would be most helpful. Thanks for any help. John.

Depends what time of year your going but if its Winter you won't get much warmth in the North Portugal , you would be better heading to the Algarve .
I can recommend Camping Turiscampo near Lagos

We enjoyed Camping Orbitur Caminha - it's on the estuary of the Minha River which is the border between Spain and Portugal, and is right by two good beaches, a sheltered one on the Minha and a wonderful but more exposed one on the Atlantic.

I don't know what time of year you're going, but it won't be particularly warm in winter!  However it can't be too bad as the campsite is open all year.  As is often the case in Portugal, the facilities aren't top notch, but they're perfectably acceptable and the area is really interesting - we loved it.  I've done a review of it.

We toured Portugal, Spain, france,Switzland,Germany Luxembourg Holland last Spring. We found the Bilbao crossing the best because of the time it arrives, gives you time to travel to your first stop.We stopped at Camping Orbitur Madelena at Villa Nova de Gaia near Porto, Camping Quinto Chave Grande near Satao, Camping Quinta da Cerejeira(Lovely small friendly site), We did not go any further south as it was snowing in Lisbon in April!!!!!. Cut across Spain, however the site mentioned were all fine.
Hope this helps.

We go to portugal each year. Portsmouth/Santander is very quick into top of portugal. St Malo is fine too but slower.St Pedro de Moel is a good site nr beach when are you going summer or winter? North colder in winter and can be v quiet.
