hello,
we are looking at camping for a few days near La Rochelle in July, so we can visit the area and enjoy the sea.
I have looked at quite a few sites and I need a bit of info if anyone can help?
What are the toll fees like in July for the bridge, I have seen 8-11 euros per crossing is this correct and is this one way?
Sites on the island, can anyone recommend a not overly commercialised/over-priced campsite (we don't want noise late, late into the night)?
Any info will be appreciated.
Thanks

Up until this year the toll fees were in the region of 16.50 Euros in peak season, and 9 Euros outside of peak season, that is for a return, you pay going TO the island, then going FROM the island you just drive off.
However, looking at THIS WEBSITE it seems that by the end of this year the contractors building the bridge will have "got their money back" as it were and the toll will be replaced by an "ecotax". There is a table of prices further down the page.
It's all in French, but that is what I can make out of it with my (limited) French.
So it looks like it will be quite a bit cheaper at 3.05 Euros during the months June to September inclusive. The prices below that refer to subscriptions for different classes of vehicle and different numbers of crossings. No experience of staying there in July, have stayed at L'Ocean in June which we really liked.

I have just had a look and this PDF file which suggests to me that the Ecotax might be added to the bridge tolls. I hope I'm wrong!

Yes, you may be right there! The way I read the other website link it looked like that was all that would be charged, not at all sure now! Although reading it again, it definitely says that the toll will be REPLACED by Ecotax, of that I am sure, so totally confused now as your table suggests otherwise!

We stayed at the municipal site in Courade called Le Remondeau. It is right on the beach, a short walk to the supermarket and village with restaurants etc and was perfect for us (couple with no children). When our kids came with us we went to Le Ocean and we all loved it but as we don't use the pool and instead prefer to be a short walk from restaurants etc with lower cost. The facilities were spotlessly clean but not the newest.
We have stayed at La tour Des Prises - La Couarde-sur-Mer. It is in the 2012 ACSI book page 109. The site is in an old walled orchard - it is normally very quiet. The cycle tracks that go all around the island start just outside the site entrance. An evening walk around the vinyards may reward you with glimpses of owls on the hunt! Intend returning next June.

The Venise Vert is brilliant ... we've stayed at the Municipal in Arcais (very good value) and at Coulon.
On Isle de Re we stayed just outside Ars ... a name of endless puns and merriment!
So much for the tolls being abolished once they had recovered the cost of building. The Ecotax was only €3.05 and was included in the toll price, so basically there is hardly any change in price, only now it is to be classed as Ecotax.
