Hi Everyone and Happy New Year,

I can't find anything on their website saying that charcoal bbqs are not allowed on the site but want to make sure and know someone on ukcampsite would be able to help.

We have a great little fold up charcoal bbq that we use when camping and prefer this to a gas one but have heard that some French sites don't allow charcoal bbqs on site because of the risk of fire and wondered if this was the case at La Garangeoire.

I'm asking now because of the sales and thought we would get a small gas bbq cheaper than waiting till nearer summertime but would really prefer to use our charcoal one if possible.

If I have to buy a gas one does anyone have any reccomendations of which one to go for e.g cadac or other.

Thanks in advance.

Dawn

Found it under their Useful Holiday Information:

Useful Holiday Information

What constitute towards "high risk" is dependent upon location and season.

South of France in August would be considered as high risk, whereas Northern France in April is likely to be very low risk.

I would contact the site directly to enquire.

As for which gas BBQ to purchase, IMHO, my Cadac Safari Chef HP does not work well as a BBQ, and I do not like using the rippled side of the grill for cooking, as it is not easy to keep clean.

Others swear by the Cadacs that use low pressure gas cylinders as BBQ though.

cadac's are good just alittle over priced, as the OP has said the LP ones work better as a bbq, seen alot of moans about the HP bbqing, never used the HP one myself, i have the carri cadac, its good if not alittle hard to get used to and is quite heavy is your limited on weight.

Not sure what the link above refers to.

Was at La Garangeoire in June. Charcoal bbq's no problem, they even sell it in the shop. I use nothing else. There were lots using them, even down beside the lake people were using throw away ones.

We have been to La Garangeoire for the past two years, in August 2010 we were allowed to use charcoal bbqs but in August 2011 we checked with reception and were told charcoal bbqs were not allowed and had in fact been banned since May. We had to use gas so it seems as if things can change year on year.

We used our cadac as a gas bbq which my husband despaired of so we have since bought a cheap gas bbq and will probably leave the cadac at home next time.

La Garangeoire is a lovely site and I'm sure you will have a good holiday.

You'll find that in some areas of France barbecues are banned when the weather has been very dry for a certain period of time.  It's not generally down to individual campsites, but the 'Prefecture' will announce the ban - and it will apply to any campsite, and any individual home in the area.  Last year was exceptionally dry in some areas of France, early in the year, and many areas which normally didn't ban barbecues, had a ban in place.

Not sure what the link above refers to.

The link is for Eurocamp's Useful Information page, and it contains a paragraph on the use of BBQ on their sites.
