Help!  We can't decide where to go this year and I would love you to spam me with some ideas - general location and/or sites.

'We' are 2 adults and one 2 and a half year old. We love medieval history and walking. The toddler also loves castles but also dinosaurs, steam trains and space to run.  We don't mind a 2-centre holiday to get a combination of R&R and sight-seeing.

We are planning on taking the first three weeks of June and are happy to go anywhere in France.  Last year we went down into Roussillon at Easter and had an amazing time, first on the coast at Les Criques de Porteils near Collioure and then at Val d'Aleth near Limoux.  We indulged in Cathar castles and abbeys until they were almost coming out of our ears.  If that gives you an idea of our likes. We don't expect to better that this year but it would be nice to have a number of historic/cultural sites within easy reach of wherever we pitch up.

So far, we are considering the Dordogne area around Sarlat or Rocamadour -  as we want to visit it before we're confined to school hols.  Also thinking about visiting  Arles and Avingon if we can find a nice site there.  But my heart is also calling me to the mountains.

So with the benefit of all your experience, please help.

I thought you meant UK sites, I would put this post in the camping and caravanning abroad section if I were you.

What about following various sites along the Compostella de Santiago pilgrimage routes?

Or a bit further over from the Dordogne could see a visit to the lovely old towns of Eymet and Saint Emillion as well as a few days up the Medoc to see the big wine producing chateaux - a few cheeky degustations to accompany it as well?

The Morbihan region of Brittany would be a good start.
For dinosaurs there is Le Parc de Prehistoire in Malansac. Then for one of the best medieval sites you can find anywhere try Guerande.
Nearby there are the Carnac standing stones - not medieval but interesting. Some decent beaches too.
Problem is that it is not South so the weather is not always up to scratch.

Gorges du Tarn/Jonte/Dourbie areas - fabulous natural scenery, lovely rivers, and more mediaeval villages than you could possibly visit!  Then there's the Knights Templar villages of La Couvertoirade, St Eulalie De Cernon, Viala pas du Jaur, and St Jean de Alcas, plus the (being restored but fascinating) La Cavalerie.  There are wild flowers, wild places, lots of birds of prey, including vultures which fly over the campsites in the region, old ruined chateaux such as Peyrelade.  Then you've all the natural scenery, which is fantastic and quite different to that around the Aude/Cathar area (we have a friend with a house between Limoux and Peyrepertuse).

There's a place on the Corniche with dinosour footprints - and my boys loved it there when they were small.  There are lots of caves and grottoes, ruins, and wild rocky places like Montpellier La Vieux - which my sons also loved when they were small.

For us, we like the Tarn/Jonte/Dourbie area better than the Dordogne - more rugged, wilder, and also less touristy - and there are some fabulous campsites - many with access to the rivers for swimming or just paddling.  The people are friendly, and you're only an hour and a bit away from the Mediterranean if you need a fix of seaside.

Another alternative is the Gard department of the Languedoc-Roussillon, especially if you like Roman history. Nimes, Pont du Gard and Arles and discovering the remains of the Via Domitia.

If you want to wet your appetite download the brochure "fancy the Gard" from the Gard tourism web-site. They have a tourist office in Cavendish Square, behind John Lewis, if you are ever in London where you can pick up brochures.

Yes I'd second the Gard ttoo.  We had a fab day out at the Pont de Gard with lots to do by the river, see the bridge and the rather good visitor centre too.

Mrs Tethersend [Hist and Geog grad] LOVES the corbiere hills - some FABULOUS castles in super scenery - and all the blood and guts of the albergencian crusade to read about

She is also laughing her head off reading a book 'The discovery of France' by Graham Robb which she would have no hesitation in recommending
