Am thinking of visiting Italy for the first time, i fancy a change from France. Just wondering if there were any recommended routes for Lake Como. or any sites?
I have 2 children under 11, and would love to be lakeside if possible.
WOuld welcome any suggestions, am feeling a bit stressed as our holiday is already booked and paid for by now normally.
Thanks

Plenty of various routes down to Como depends if you are in a rush or just meandering down...I know madasman is right about Garda personally speaking if I had a choice between Como or Garda I would definetly pick Garda.Have been there for the last two years and really enjoyed it.Last year we stayed at Camping Du Parc had a pitch right near the lake and only a short walk into the town.Even though its quite a large site it never seemed overcrowded.

All the Italian lakes are wonderful and different in character. We stayed at a campsite called La Riva at the northern tip of the Lake Como at a place called Sorico. I think the most direct route would be via the St Gothard Tunnel but you could use any number of other routes through France and Austria. The eastern side of Lake Como has the better road access, roads on the other side of the lake are quite narrow.

Thanks. i have been looking at La Riva. Is the site child friendly?
Being a couple of seniors I am never quite sure what that means! It does have a swimming pool and a small playground but I am not sure it has a entertainent programme.

Hi, we have been to all four of the Italian lakes and although they are all lovely we would only do Garda now we have kids. Garda is brilliant - Como is very sedate and pretty but the water isn't very clean nor do they have the same quantity of beach access. Garda is geared up for kids and families but I would say the others are not. With Garda there are so many sites with families in mind - cant go wrong really. Also, the lake at Como is too deep for me to be happy with the kids going in whereas Garda is gentle and sloping. I would do Bardolino, Malcesine (castle, cable car) , or Riva with kids - or perhaps the Camping Fornella over near Salo. The ship in the cliff is a good trip out! Sirmiones good too. Garda is more family friendly - weve been probably 15 times now.
we went to Como last year and although we avoided the narrow roads around Como itself, we were unable to avoid the lake road round Lugano (I think that was it). anyway, I was passenger and squirming as we passed other vehicles with less than 1" to spare - and we were in a car with no caravan.
