Hi,

We are thinking of our first caravan holiday in France for this year. The area we have in mind is the Loire Valley.

We went there last year without the van and we are sure we want to have an overnight stop with the van.

I am thinking somewhere around Rouen would be good but a little closer to Calais would be fine.

It would be the same on the way back.

Any suggestions of where to stop are welcome.

Thanks,

Camping St Claire at Neufchatel en Bray - is between Abbeville and Rouen, ideally placed just off the autoroute.  Takes the ACSI card between the following dates 01/04 - 30/06 and  01/09 - 24/10 at 12 euros per night for pitch, two adults, car and caravan, awning, and electricity.

It's a discount card for camping out of season. You buy a book with a huge list of participating sites, gives you the dates for each one, the card comes free with the book. The sites have a fixed discounted charge for the night.

Hi - as Franbee says, have a look at www.campingcard.co.uk for details.  Sites in four bands, 10, 12, 14 or 16 euros - and this buy the pitch package for two people.  Dates are usually outside peak season, but French peak season is much much shorter than the peak season in this country, and some sites accept the card until mid-July and then again from about mid-August.  There is usually quite a significant saving on the 'normal' site tariff on certain dates - last year we saved 26 euros per night for a couple of our dates, and then about 12 euros per night for the remaining dates!  Some sites are 7 nights for the price of 6, or 14 nights for 11, or even 30 nights for 21, using the ACSI card too!

Definitely worth having if you're travelling outside mid-July to mid-August - and the sites you want accept the card, of course!

Depending on which way we're going & if we want to get through Rouen in the evening or morning we stay at Camping St Claire - as mentioned - or the municpal at Bernay;

Hi Kdixon

I would highly recommend Camping St Nicolas where we stayed in July 2008. It is very near to the A28 and Rouen and fits your requirement for a night halt very wll.

http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/reviews.asp?revid=8165

I am very glad that we seem to have started a trend as my review is the first of 5 positive reviews on UKC. The site certainly deserves its positive write-ups

It is very handy for the A28 and near to a beautiful village. Note my, and other's, warning about the pathway from the campsite to the village, however, it's very rough and stoney.

Regards
Tim

St Claire is good but they like to site you rather than let you choose.  They usually seem to put same nationalities together - not what I prefer.  The others mentioned above look excellent as well.  I will sub to this thread for future reference.

We've been to the Ste Claire 6 times for overnight stops. It's lovely. If it wasn't we'd have found another site. A couple of people have said they site you next to the same nationality (or maybe it was Oxter last year too It's never happened to us & I had a good look round last year and couldn't see any evidence of that.

It's very convenient for getting on/off the autoroute though there is no traffic noise on the site. There is a church clock that starts to chime at 9a.m. though, which I personally like but others might find less amusing.

The site is on a cycle route, which used to be an old railway line. It's a short walk (or ride) along there into town, where there are several places to eat. The supermarkets are also a short walk from the site. There's a LeClerc and umm... an Aldi? or a Lidl? There's a little river at the bottom of the site & last year a gaggle of ducks 'helped' us pitch our tents.

The loos are spotless and the showers hot. Mme Ancelot has been learning English, so if you want to practise your French try Francis instead. They do decent if simple food of an evening & have a lovely outdoor seating area in a courtyard garden.

hope that helps,

Liz
