Going back to Les Mathes in August but in a real dilemna about the car. It has clocked up loads of miles and I know now there is a problem with the clutch and flywheel that could cost fortunes if it goes. So I got thinking...would it be worth my while (and for peace of mind) hiring a car in UK to drive over and back? Anyone ever done this?? What is the deal with insurance etc..

Hi, they can be a bit funny about this and charge far more, or at least that was the case about 15 years ago, so hopefully thinkgs have changed.

I wrote off my OH car just over a week before we were due to go to France in it and the travel insurance we had booked for the journey only covers the car from the week you intend to travel.

We looked into hiring a car and to hire in England would have been fine but to take abroad they were quoting around £2000 as it was leaving the country even though we tried to hire through companies that also had european branches.

Things may be different now of course.

We solved the problem by my husband's mother lending us her car and us lending her my little car that was not capable of the journey but was fine for the little running about she did.  Just the extra cost of added MIL to the insurance than.  Hubby covered for any car and the travel breakdown just needed different car details.

PS we have also had an exhaust drop off in France (travel insurance  covered the repair and hire car for a few days but not parts and it dropped off due to a problem when driving off the ferry  not poor maintainence), a punctured tyre, on a car with a little space saver spare, another problem with an exhaust (solved by hubby this time with radweld type stuff) so travel cover for the car can be very useful.   (that is over a few trips not one lol and not had anything go wrong for years now)

We always travel in france with european breakdown cover but i know that this particular part on the car can cost in excess of £1000 here in the UK. It could end up being far more in France

I would suggest if it needs doing - cheapest long term solution is to either change car now or get problems sorted now?

Car rental will alwys be dead money

Really can't afford to get it done now or change the car.....got a warranty that covers against breakdown repair costs but doesn't cover problems before you actually konk out. Will just have to wait and see I suppose

Drive to French port, then hire car in France, will have to pay parking fees for your car. By prebooking from UK should save on hire costs against spot hire charges.

We hired a car in England to go skiing in France many years ago when the one we had been planning to take broke down. We wanted one suitable for my children's car seats then aged 14 months and 3 years. I was also pregnant with our 3rd and wanted comfort.

We did have to give the address of relatives where we were staying and I remember that that seemed particularly relevant to the hirers at the time, but I was never quite sure why!

I don`t recall it being a problem and as far as I remember we got the whole package of insurance/recovery etc from the hire firm. I don`t remember it costing much more than the cost of UK hire but them it was a long time ago!

hello,

What about leasing a car. I know that you can lease by the week/individual month not sure about taking it abroad though. A web search will bring them up.

Is it a vauxhall you have marky? because if it is the clutch/flywheel is covered under warranty, as its the flywheel thats at fault, and the part comes as a flywheel clutch kit, i made the mistake of paying over £1000 to have it done on my zafira!

We had a lease car for years, to take it out of the UK we needed a "vehicle on hire" certificate and a letter of permission, as well as insurance certificate. We got these from the lease company.( No charge was made-but cars were on 3 year lease)

A hire company should be able tosupply the necessary documents-but they will probably charge extra.

I think you can take 'Street Cars' out of England - or at least my son has done several times in the past.  If you have a Street Car near you it may be worth looking into the costs of joining, and whether you can still use them in Europe.
