Blummin Hell Rhonda if we pull this off at Les P we are all going to talk about Horrid Henry and Jaquline Wilson, no doubt also Sarah Jane and MI high.

Just on a side note we love Deepdale in Norfolk one of the things they do is a Saturday night pub quiz but its both adult and kids questions. We won it last year when our youngest new where Sarah Jane went to in Jamaica. It was brilliant, he felt so proud

I know Colin, think of the fantastic intellectual stuff we can discuss. Now I dont know what MI is but will ask Chloe in the morning.

We love quizzes too, we took part in one at Le Pin Parasol last year and were second. We still blame the music round where most of the songs were french. Chloe said it was a fix

Couldnt you just answer Jonny Hallyday for everything...surely you'd get about half of them right!

Oddly I rather like this area for driving (around Chartres). Its very flat with no hedgerows or road side features, just the road itself. Its very very open. unusually so and gives a real feeling of space, and of not being hemmed in

I can't help but wonder at just what a miracle the cathedral at Chartres must have looked to people 800 years ago - it is still very impressive, especially when you see it illuminated from some distance

Whilst this thread is still live could anyone suggest a route to the Dordogne from Caen?

If we assume heading south from Caen that we're going to end up either at Angers or Tours. Is there a preferred route south from either location? Were staying north of Perigeaux which is equal distance between the A20 from Limoges in the east, and the A10 main route to the west.

Which is ther nicer drive?

We've just booked to go to the Dordogne for the first time, sailing on the Caen route.  We're planning to go Le Mans, Tours, stopover near Poitiers, Limoges to Sarlat.  Coming back we'll go back towards Poitiers, Nantes, Rennes as we're staying up near St Malo for a few days before we catch the ferry there.  We'll pay tolls on the way down but we can get back pretty much toll free, there wasn't much difference in the mileage either.

If you are going near Perigueux, could you go from Poitiers down the N10 to Angouleme?  I'm sure I've seen someone mention that route on here before.

I've no idea whether we've picked the best route but we'll give it a try.

Thanks Mrs Anorak, i'd kind of given up on getting any opinons on this one, We were thinking on balance that we'd indeed head to Poitiers/Angouleme then turn east to Brantome.

You're going a bit further south than us so were staying overnight at Azay Le Rideau just west of Tours, coming down fro Caen. Really looking forward to the summer

Yes I'm looking forward to the summer hols as well now that we've booked.  It's going to be the longest trip we've done in France... we been to the Loire valley, Paris, Normandy and Brittany but decided to try the Dordogne with a few days by the sea on the way back.  Chose the Caen out /St Malo  back as the price was reasonable from the CC with site bookings.  I spent ages on google maps trying to work out the easiest way to get there as most of the routes mentioned on here are from Calais: would have been cheaper but even more miles .....

Enjoy your holiday

If using the Orleans route, it might be worth getting on the autoroute (A10) around the city.  It's not the nicest of places to drive through and it's worse when towing. We get on at Janville (J12) or Artenay (J13).  Then you head south until Junction 2 or 3 or the A75.  It should only be a few euros.  There's a cracking town called La Ferte St Aubin just after Junction 2.
