Please has anyone any recommendation/warnings about sites in these areas.
Concerned about access and small pitches with 7m long caravan and 5m. car but no motor mover. We're travelling in May, using ACSI where possible. Should we book, we don't usually?
Thanks

I'm interested in this too - so watching carefully.
So far I've found that pitches in Cinque terre are small even compared to others in Italy which we have found are not exactly generous. Access to some sites in the area has also made us a bit wary. We have a similar sized car/van as you.

We stayed at Camping Acqua Dolce in Levanto  in a campervan, twice as we liked it a lot. http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/details.asp?revid=9723

The site is quite tight and terraced so some pitches are easier to access than others. We didn't book during late may/june, but this was a few years ago. There are other sites in the area, one did look to have easier access but not sure of its name, could be this one

Pian Di Picche, 19015 Levanto (sp)
Levanto, Liguria, Italy

Easy access to the train to the cinque terre, would reccommend the area

We also want to go to the Cinque Terre in May.  There's a review on here for a site called Camping River, near La Spezia, which sounds quite nice, but the reviewer had a tent, so not sure whether the pitches would accommodate a large van.  Mind you, I've often seen huge outfits shoe-horned into very small spaces (and not just in Italy) so anything's possible!

We stayed at camping River for the last two years. It is a very good site, takes ACSI (very expensive without). It has a variety of sites 2 or 3 different "bands", 2 or 3 Euro per day difference in price, some large some tight!  The helicopter base over the river does one night per week night flying (up to about midnight), I think it is Monday night!  Long closing at lunch time.  Parking is seperate from, but convenient to, pitches.   The Cinque Terre area was very badly hit by storms after we left, and at least one of the villages was practically destroyed! I think it might have been Vernazza.

Re Camping River. Should  have mentioned in my previous post, the lane from the main road is single track in places and has a very tight 90degree turn! Watch out for the low wall on the inside of the corner!

We stopped at a site named Camping La Sfringeat Diva Marina on the Cinque Terre and with a 7.50 mtr caravan wehad no problems.  In fact we visited this site in 2004 and when we booked in were given our first ACSI Book and Camping Card which had about 100 sites in that the first year of its existance   This site was excellent for the Cinque Terre as just down the road wasthe Treain station where you could board a train and get on and off at each of the wonderful villages.  We loved it there.

This may be of interest to anyone thinking of going to cinque Terre area.

Flash floods tear through town in northern Italy

At least five people have died and streets have been turned into rivers in the Liguria and Tuscany regions of Italy after torrential rain caused rivers to break their banks.

Authorities from Liguria, northeast Italy, have called for a regional disaster to be declared as tonnes of muddy water gushed through villages.

Amateur video shows a violent torrent of water pouring through the centre of Monterosso, in Liguria. The water appears to reach the top of shop front windows.

Diggers can be seen clearing roads blocked by fallen trees as cars struggled through water and debris.

"Everything is missing here - supplies, water, electricity," said Angelo Betta, mayor of Monterosso.

"People are getting into their houses through the terraces, everything is flooded. Monterosso doesn't exist anymore," he added.

Thanks for all the replies so far.
Re- the floods last autumn, I have read on another site that tourists are being encouraged to visit the area so that their spending supports the local economy.
Without the tourist income, many businesses will face even more difficulties.

Hope no-one thinks I was advising to stay away from Cinque Terre, it is a beautiful area, and I will probably stay there a few days on my way south, to Sorrento.  I,m sure it wont be long before they fix it up!

Jim

Where do you stay when you go to Sorrento? Is it a site with decent access and pitch size?

David

David, We havnt been to Sorrento before, last year we only went as far as Camping Flash, North of Rome (We spent too long at the Cinque Terre) we were recommended a site there, by a Dutchman, dont have the details at hand, cos we are in the final stages of packing for a 3 week trip to the Caribbean, starting tomorrow night, not with the caravan, of course! If I get the chance, Ill let you know.

Camping Sant Antonio **** is excellent campsite we have stopped there twice Giovanni the owner is very hospitable and helpful. Good for trips to Pompeii, Capri,Naples and Amalfi Coast. One tip is we think it is better to travel north to south down the Amalfi coast road (not with a caravan) as the road then runs side by side with the sea there are quite a few lay bys to stop and park to view the wonderful panorama. On the other side of the road coming up from the South it is all rocky right on the road side with nowhere to stop and the lovely views are obliterated by the traffic going the other way as it is a very narrow road.
