Hi there,

I'm going to buy a new cooker, a double burner & grill one, upgrading from single burner which uses aerosol size cannisters.  The new one will use a gas bottle like a Camping Gaz 907.

We're packed to bursting in the car already and I do not want to take a large heavy cylinder with us.  We'll only going to one campsite for 2 weeks, our stopovers en route will be in hotels. I wondered if it is possible to hire a bottle (and compatable regulator) from the campsite.

Thank you for your help.  So many knowledgeable people on here, it's wonderful.

Emma x

Before we got the trailer we used to take two 904's to save on space, these days we take two 907's, having two cylinders means you will never run out of Gaz.

As we use EHU, our Gaz consumpion is real low, and I recon, one 907, would last us for 5 weeks!.

We changed our old cooker for a new "CampingGaz CampingChef" twin burner and grill back in 2008, only because it was a bargain at £20 and came with the CampinGaz regulator and Hose.

It's been a mighty fine cooker, and I would highly reccomend it.

If you realy are that stuck for space, get a 904, should you run out of Gaz, the campsite will simply exchange, but even in France the cost of a 904 refill, is almost the same as the larger 907.

We got all our CampinGaz cylinders for next to nowt, some from tenters, who were going to caravan, and the rest from our local tip, in fact now I have the complete set 2 of each 901, 904 and 907!.

Hello Emma,
We have camped in France for many years visiting more than ¾ of the Departements. We have gone through small tents, a frame tent, a trailer tent, caravans and now a motorhome. We have never visited a campsite which hired Camping Gaz bottles and regulators. They may be out there but we have never seen them. Very rarely you get cooking facilities in the service blocks, this is common in Denmark but I certainly wouldn’t rely on it. If you are going to just one site and you know which it is it would be worth sending them an e-mail. I would wait until the site opens, which could be as late as May as many do not respond until they are open. I think you will need to take your own bottle if you want to use Camping Gaz. Most sites in France with a shop have this gas though it is cheaper in supermarkets. An alternative would be to pay a deposit on a French gas cylinder at a supermarket petrol station when you get to your site. Le Cube is available widely and is one of the smallest bottles available. They used to give you a regulator but now you have to buy one and not all petrol stations will have one. You could have to travel miles to find one. You then have to take back what may be a nearly full bottle which has cost you over €40 to get perhaps €25 back - if the petrol station is busy they almost certainly will not give you back your deposit.
I think what I am trying to say is make room for the Camping Gaz bottle and take it with you. You can exchange them in almost every supermarket/hypermarket.
Regards,
Carl

If you can hold off until you go on holiday, buy a 907 cylinder in a French supermarket a lot cheaper than here.

I think you will find your only real option is to find room in your car for the 907 cylinder. You could go for the 904, which is smaller, but as an earlier post stated they are about the same cost for a refill as the 907.

Don`t buy the 907/904 bottle + gas from a local dealer. Go to your local tip and get one and take that to your dealer for a refill. You then have a full and safe 907/904 for about £18/£20.

You can't, they are similar price in France for both bottle & refill. Best way is to find a secondhand 907 at a boot sale or council tip.

If you haven't got room for a 907 then you really need to remove something else. After the tent and sleeping gear it's the next most important item.
Never buy a new bottle as they are readily available on Freecycle or as Tentz suggests at local tip and normally they still have plenty of gas left in them.

A radical alternative, and taking up less space, would be to buy a £14.99 double boiling ring (that's what it's called) from Argos, and a hook-up cable, and use electricity.  All pitches in France have a hook-up point, and if you're using an ACSI card or Camping Cheques the cost of the electricity is included in the 'package' of two adults, car and caravan or motorhome or tent, awning, electricity, and one dog!

I know we have a caravan, but that's what we do!  We cook outside in the awning, using our hob, mini-oven, and only ever use the caravan gas for en-route kettle boiling!

why dont you buy a coleman 424 it runs on petrol, don't let that bit put you off. It is very popular but quite expensive, however you just fill it up with petrol at the local petrol station.

Thank you all so much.

I've measured a 907 and it's going in, I'm bidding on a trailer on ebay now!!  I like the idea of the double boiling ring too though thanks as i'd not thought of that.

You have saved me from buying a new 907, I will head down to the tip.

And Ollie, we were at Massereau last year, and planning on returning this year if we can get our annual leave sorted in time for there still to be pitches!  Am hoping on 2 weeks from 5 August.  When you going?

Thanks again folks, Emma x

We're there from the 2 Aug for 11 nights - so if you get booked do drop by to say hello. We were also there last year around the same time in a green Conway trailer tent.

Like a lot of people on here,I have never heard of anywhere were you can hire gas bottles or regulators.Camping Gaz seems to be the only gas you can get on the continent,Calor Gas does not exist over there.Last year though we took a full 4.5kg Calor bottle, and it did us two weeks with gas to spare, there was only 2 of us though. I'm thinking because we are taking the grandchildren with us this year,I may take a spare bottle just in case.

Camping Gaz is still the popular choice for campers due to the small size containers, but most certainly not the only choice. Almost every garage in France (not often on motorways though) sells bottled gas. The major supermarkets also have bottled gas, again usually in the garage.
