Can anyone recommend campsites in this area? We have looked at the reviews on this website and are thinking about Camping de la Filature and camping les Moulettes. However, we are taking our older dog with us and are concerned that there maybe a lot of flies in this area. Has anyone any advice on this? Or other campsite recommendations? We like rivers/lakes and obviously pet friendly sites! Thanks

Thanks for these. I think we will risk it with Les Moulettes - it has rave reviews on a lot of websites. We only have 2 weeks so Camping de la Bageasse is a bit to far south - but somewhere for another time!

If you do go to Les Moulettes, and you want a bit of river to swim in & give the dog a soaking, there's nice spot about 3km downstream from the village centre:
45deg 12' 16.25" N
3deg 56' 28.34" E
if you search on Google Earth.
It's on the opposite bank to the Pra de Mars campsite (which looked OK, but too far from the village,
The swimming pool adjacent to Les Moulettes is very good, and free for campers. It's got a little snack bar/restaurant which does simple meals and cheap carafes of wine.
There's a canoeing centre in the village, which was tremendous fun and not difficult even for an unfit old duffer like me. A gentle downstream paddle with a few small rapids through a beautiful limestone valley.
Wish we'd had longer to explore the surrounding area.
Camping la filature would be fine for a couple of days but I wouldn't stay longer. We stopped over night and liked it well enough - especially the little bar and the food.
Thanks again for your opinions - much appreciated and good to know people have been in that area - it feels far from the madding crowd so looking forward to it. Dog advice really helpful Tony!
We had a lovely break at Langeac a few years ago. Its a nice little town some restaurants in town, big supermarket on the outskirts. It was very hot when we were there. Camping is called Domaine le Pradeau, right on edge of town. On River Allier.
