Hiya

We live in Scotland, between Edinburgh and Glasgow and are going to France for the first time this year. We've decided to do the Plymouth to Roscoff overnight crossing. This way we will set off early on the first day and drive down with lots of stops etc and should have time for dinner before boarding the ferry. We arrive at 8am next morning and campsite in Brittany is only a 2.5 to 3 hour drive. I don't drive so this is as far as Mr S wants to drive this time round.

We went to Belgium the last two years and drove from home to Harwich, then stayed in a hotel before getting ferry next morning and again only had a couple of hours drive to the campsite. You just need to work out what works best/is comfortable for you. We make the journey part of our holiday and never set ourselves milestones so we are never disappointed or stressed out! We have two children, now 9 and 6 so make sure they have enough to keep them occupied. They both love the ferry and the "treat" of staying in a hotel lol!

Just go for it, it is so satisfying and its an adventure! We were so proud of ourselves for arranging everything ourselves and actually getting there! You'll love it

proud of ourselves the first time for arranging everything ourselves and actually making it there!

We took our little lad down to the South of France when he was 7 months old, it's 1000 miles approx door to door, we stayed overnight in Etaps twice each way. I don't drive so hubby did all the driving - and it honestly wasn't anywhere near as bad as I thought it was going to be!

He's 5 now and he can't wait for our trip to France in June, we went last year and he loved it. We go to the Vendee, it's approx 7 hours from Calais, so a shorter journey than you'll have in the Uk!

We have travelled from central scotland to france and spain for the last twenty years, and treat the driving as part of the holiday. We normally use the short crossings, but have travelled to portsmouth too. France is such a wonderful place that  driving  long distances seem easier than in britain. Just pick an area then ask on this forum, and you will get all the help needed.
