I intend to visit Austria in July, any ideas on what to visit. I will be travelling through France from Cherbourg. I will be visiting the Eagle Nest and Berchtesgaden, but other than that Im not sure. Any suggestions to campsite etc would be appreciated.

When you get to Austria, go to Oberndorf bei Salzburg and visit the Silent Night Chapel. It's a lovely little town right on the border and Silent Night was written there.

We always stop at ACSI Site Winkel-Lanthal at Bishopswiessen just out side Berchtesgaden is a good site in good position to visit the Obersalzburg.  As lizex says Oberndorf and a visit to the Silent Night Chapel is lovley.  Salzburg is on about 20 mins away and going into Austria you will find the fuel is much cheaper than Germany.  Food is cheap in Germany and a huge variety.  Just down the road from Winkel-Landthal there is a shopping centre with a very large supermarket which is excellent

A visit to the Konigsee is a must and a ride on an electric boat on the see whiles away a few hours.  Berchtesgaden town itself is very nice good underground carpark which has recently been enlarged.  As you say a must is the Eagles Nest.  If when you go up to the carpark for this stop and have a look around the Documentation Centre which is a real good history of the Obersalzburg during the war.  You can also take a walk into the Tunnels used in WW11.  Another place to visit on the Obersalzburg are The Turken Gastof and you can go down the Tunnels to the Bunkers that lead to all the Nazi houses on the Obersalzburg.  They are very narrow tunnels and at the bottom are the bunkers belonging to Hitler, Eva Braun, and another for Blonde his German Shepherd.  It is so difficult to explain all to see in this area so it would be better to go to my website as in Homepage above and click on Germany Info of which there are two pages, links to the various places of interest, prices etc on there and a few photo's.  If you have any more questions ask away.  We have been visiting this area for over 30 years so know our way around and the area quite well.

If you fancy the site I mentioned I know it will not be taking Camping Card while you are there but I think you would be well to book well in advance.

Depending which way you go to Salzburg, Chiemsee in Bavaria is also worth a look. Mad King Ludwig built a castle there and it has a magic table that decks itself with food like the one in the fairy tale! In reality the table sinks into the floor so the servants in the room below can heap food on it.
