We would like to try camping in Spain this year ,as weve been to France although we want to get the ferry to Satander or bilbao spend time there and drive up through france spending another two weeks in france at Gironde and the Loire Valley.
Ferries seem really expensive although weve had a good quote from sites abroad has any one else done this. We are also travelling with three children and a trailer tent.(is this a bad idea) .Any advice gratefully accepted

hi havnt been abroad camping yet but am chomping at the bit, there is a really great looking sit in the costa dorada,i think that if we go though ,we will drive both ways and stop off a couple of times on the way ,because as you say the ferry is very expensive.if you didnt want to open your t/t you could always stop off at campanile roadside motels. have stayed in these before and they are nice and very reasonable
Went from Plymouth to Satander a few times several years ago with touring caravans & children. Well worth the trip. Stopped at a lovely site at La Franca in northern spain, has direct access to safe beach. Also theres a good site just outside Santilliana had a look around that a couple of years ago whilst in the area. When travelling up through france there are many sites some large some small ones on farms. We found the sites through the Caravan Club European sites directory, so many lovely areas the children will love it.
Have stayed at the site in Santillana. Some of the toilet facilities left a lot to be desired. They were a bit like a portakabin type of building, which had seen better days. The main facilities were good though. There was a nice pool area, the site shop was good and the restaurant at the site was superb. Three course meal with wine cost 1,500 Ptas when we were there. It's walking distance to the town of Santillana with the bars and restaurants there. There are lots of nice places to visit along the coast. If you have an eletric hook up you will need to get a Spanish adaptor as the French one doesn't fit. The Spanish however seem to have one rule for them and another for other people. Saw quite a lot of home made contraptions. If the site is predominately Spanish there will quite a lot of noise into the early hours sometimes. The cabaret/disco at the bar at Santillana didn't get going until nearly midnight.
