Us too, just like Ciarri - we just keep driving if the weather is bad.
One year, having wanted to canoe on the Dordogne for ages, we were heading in that direction, but got to Brive in heavy rain and the river Vezere was a boiling, brown torrent. It was raining heavily, so we just kept going. The Dordogne was even worse as we crossed it. The rain got much worse and in Cahors the roads were starting to flood, with torrents coming off the hillsides. We decided to overnight just south of Cahors, but thought a site on a hill would be a good idea! We stayed at La Truffiere near St Cirq Lapopie and the rain eased off during the evening. In the morning it was still grey and drizzling, so we had a look at the site computer, and checked the weather.
The sun was shining in the Languedoc area on the Mediterranean, so that's where we headed - and had two weeks of glorious sunshine. Our third week we spent in the Ardeche, and met some Dutch rallyers who had been in the Dordogne area and couldn't leave their campsite because the access road was flooded.
Good areas, further south - Gorges du Tarn, Jonte and Dourbie (around Millau), the Black Mountains of the Languedoc, the Ardeche, the Mediterranean coast, the Camargue if you like wild, the Drome to the east of the Rhone Valley, Upper Provence (not the Med at that end, it's too busy even in June), including the Valensole area, or the Gorges du Verdon, the Cathar castles of the Aude and around Carcassonne - all lovely areas, but then so are many other parts of France - many of which don't have 'a name' that you'd recognise. As Ciarri says, some of the nicest parts are those you discover en-route to somewhere else, particularly if you stay off the autoroutes.
As far as campsites go, at that time of year, you'll have the pick of anywhere - and there are loads of campsites in all the areas mentioned. Just get yourself a good guide (see other thread for suggestions) and a good map - and look for something which fits your bill.
