We tend to go further down the West Coast than Lacanau/Hourtin to Contis Plage/ Cap de l'homy and Espacier. Contis is its own village with an aires - you can stay for up to a week now I think.

Cap de l'homy has a municipal but gets booked up very quick.

We have been the last 5 years in August and unfortunately not the best time for waves.

May be a bit too wild there though as you have young children is my only reservation

A word of warning, beware of undercurrents. I am a very strong swimmer, having lived all my life at the coast. A few years ago I was on one of those big long beaches above Bordeaux and messing about diving into the waves in about 3 feet of water. I dived into one smallish wave, and felt that I was in a tumble dryer, not knowing which way was up or down and I honestly felt that my time had come. Thankfully it spat me out, but it was the most frightening 30 seconds of my life.

Please can anyone tell me if there are any good surfing beaches in Brittany. We don't want to drive too far, taking the caravan over for the first time and fancy going to Brittany.

beaches south of the crozon peninsula, then the beaches down from Audierne towards penmarch- all with in a couple of hours drive from roscoff...also the quiberon peninsula would be good I imagine only 3-4hrs drive.
happy surfing

I find that if you get past La Rochelle the temperature in general is better, and that is in the sea too.
We stay around Royan but travel to Ile de Oleron for the long shallow beaches and the waves. 21 degrees in the sea, so staying in for 4 hours wasn't a problem.
You can surf and body board in warm sea's with lifeguards around.
The beach down near Biscarosse was a different kettle of fish, with the beach being from horizon to horizon. the sea formed baies and you didn't realise how far down the beach you were being carried, but they did have lifeguarded area's.

Lacanau Ocean is the place to be.......they hold a leg of  the World Surfing Championships there every August, hence the number of surfing shops along the coast road.

During the championships there is an amazing vibe everywhere, all the big sponsors like Billabong and Swatch are in evidence, and you get to see some amazing stunts.

We go every few years and camp a few kilometres away in Lacanau Lac at  Le Tedey.

also look at Hossegor which is a few miles down the coast nr Mimizan.

Please don't forget this is a resurrected thread from 2012 - and was restarted by someone asking about surfing beaches in Brittany!  Almost all the recent answers are about locations further south.

I did suggest that the OP started a new thread but he doesn't seem to have done that.

All I read was surfing West coast, so I immediately thought  Aquitaine (as most surfers do). Despite this the E Leclerc was there in all it glory in 2011.

There is some surfing in Brittany but no where near as good as Aquitaine, plus the fact that the area is very sport orientated, hence the World Championships. The lacs tend to concentrate on sailing and wind surfing....so yes its quite breezy along this area.

We are do for a re-visit, maybe 201, but got to investigate the Midi Pyrenees first.

Lacanau and Le Tedey are perfect for a young family, we often see families cycling along the many cycle pistes between the beaches withe their body boards on their backs.

My kids have surfed la tranche and beaches round there for the last 5 yrs and they are great for beginners and better ( schools and stuff for hire and lessons etc), good beach breaks and great beaches to watch from , small cafés etc.

BUT as mentioned above there are some huge rip currents and waves breaking close into shore, this year I managed to get taken out by a rip for 20 mins or so and have never been so freighted in my life

Then did my AC joint in my shoulder by being smashed into the shore body surfing the next day

Think I'll go to the dordogne next yr ;-)
