Not sure if this is in right place or not but I was wondering if anyone has any advice on purchasing a new sat nav. We purchased one in 2009 a mio navman and it helped us drive from scotland to France and holland. However we had some problems with it last year when a plane crash in Peterborough saw us driving around the a82 for hours and it did not recognise any alternate routes etc. same happened in france with the new road to Disneyland Paris. So my husband wants to buy a new sat nav for our upcoming trip to lake Garda in June. Although we are flying and hiring a car this time so it would need to be able to be used in the hire car. Can anyone recommend a good one and also whether we would be able to use it in the hire car or not. I'm not keen on hiring one with the car rental would rather have our own. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

If you have a smartphone you can use the software on that.  New map downloads make all the difference.

II do have an iPhone but find the screen too small plus I wouldn't want to have excessive charges on my whilst abroad. I would prefer a new sat nav. Thanks anyway.

I have co-pilot on my phone and no need to connect to internet to use it, unlike google mapping.

This is the one we're going to buy. A little bit dearer than the equivalent TomTom but this one has lifetime map updates free, lane guidance and traffic, so works out a very good deal

I have the garmin 1490 with lifetime map updates and it seems really good. I can pre plan routes and add poi's.

Tried using an iPhone once in france and it just lost satellites all the time, had no problem with the garmin

We used our garmin in this country and france and has always been good.  Used my nokia phone last year with nokia maps which was also good.  Have also got a samsung mini tablet with sygic software, which has only been used in this country but also good.

I have just bought a used snooper satnav but not ariving till next week.  The main advantage you can get with standalone units is the ability to connect a patch antenna which sits on your roof and picks up a much better signal.

We have always used our TomTom Go 730 in UK & abroad. First class bit of kit.
Just make sure your Hire Car has a cigar lighter to plug in your SatNav. Standard on most cars I would think, but something you can specify when booking.
TomTom Outlet store has refurbished models 40% cheaper with 1 year warranty.

I would want to find this out too as it will cost £59.99 to update our map on the Mio site hence why we thought it best just to purchase a new one.

I've gone for Co Pilot for my Android smartphone. Was thinking of a SatNav but they're not cheap and Co Pilot gets really good reviews. £35 UK & Western Europe inc. 12 months traffic and one less gadget to worry about.

So far so good, although I haven't left the house yet
